The SEC Tournament champion will be crowned on Sunday. Later that evening, we will learn who the 16 host teams will be in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Kentucky baseball should hear its name called before Selection Monday.

There’s only a few conference tournament games remaining on the slate for this weekend and the Bat Cats remain in a good spot. The latest projections have Kentucky at No. 13 overall and hosting for the first time since 2017.

Kentucky should have some wiggle room

The Bat Cats are 36-18 and playing the waiting game after bowing out of the SEC Tournament with a first-round loss to Alabama. However, the resume work was done before Nick Mingione’s club made the trip to Hoover. Kentucky should be hosting.

In D1 Baseball’s latest projections, Kentucky received the No. 13 seed.

  1. Wake Forest
  2. Florida
  3. Arkansas
  4. Clemson
  5. LSU
  6. Vanderbilt
  7. Stanford
  8. Virginia
  9. Coastal Carolina
  10. Miami
  11. Alabama
  12. Auburn
  13. Kentucky
  14. Oklahoma State
  15. Boston College
  16. Indiana State

In the Lexington regional, Kentucky would be the No. 1 seed joined by Oregon State (No. 2), Kansas State (No. 3), and Morehead State (No. 4). If the Bat Cats won that regional, they would move on to face the winner of the Clemson pod in the super regionals. The Tigers are one of the hottest teams in college baseball and would be a heavy favorite to come out of a region featuring Campbell, Texas Tech, and Wagner.

We will know more about Kentucky’s path to Omaha when entire bracket is released on Memorial Day.

Kentucky drops one spot in RPI

For a long time, Kentucky held the No. 1 overall spot in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). That is no longer the case. With Arkansas making a deep run in Hoover, the Wildcats have fallen to No. 3 in RPI.

However, UK is one of only six teams to reach a significant milestone.

Due to the quality wins and a strong strength of schedule (No. 1 overall), Kentucky has done enough to earn a top-16 seed. We’ll find out soon if the selection committee agrees.
