It is officially postseason time in the Bluegrass. Kentucky was revealed to be the No. 12 national seed on Monday’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show, hosting No. 2 West Virginia, No. 3 Indiana, No. 4 Ball State at Kentucky Proud Park in a Regional later this week (June 2nd-June 5th). This is just the third time in school history that Kentucky will host an NCAA Baseball Regional. The ‘Cats were paired up with LSU’s pod. The winner of the Lexington Regional will match up with the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional for the chance to head to Omaha.

The SEC dominated Selection Monday, as eight SEC teams were selected to host Regionals (No. 16 Alabama, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 13 Auburn, No. 2 Florida, No. 12 Kentucky, No. 5 LSU, No. 15 South Carolina, No. 6 Vanderbilt). Tennessee and Texas A&M also made the Tournament, bringing the total number of SEC teams in the field to ten. The SEC became the first conference in NCAA history to host eight regionals in a single NCAA Baseball Tournament. As the great Kevin Nash once said, “This is where the big boys play.”

The ‘Cats finished the season at No. 2 in RPI behind the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, Wake Forest. Kentucky finished the season having played the hardest schedule in all of college baseball, including the sixth hardest non-conference schedule. Only Vanderbilt and Arkansas had more Quad One wins than the ‘Cats (20). They finished the season at 36-18, their most wins in a season since 2017.

Kentucky will begin their March to Omaha against Ball State on Friday. The ‘Cats kicked off the 2006 NCAA Baseball Tournament against Ball, falling to the Cardinals 3-1 in Game One. Kentucky came back to eliminate Ball State in the second round before falling to College of Charleston in the Regional Finals. Ball State finished the season at 36-21, winners of the MAC Tournament.
