Bowl games are supposed to be fun. There was a learning curve early in his tenure, but Mark Stoops has found the right balance between work and play for the Wildcats’ annual postseason excursions. This year’s trip to Nashville for the Music City Bowl is no exception.

Before Deone Walker arrived at Kentucky, he had a much different expectation of what college football would be like.

“I thought it would be like all 100%, no fun, like the Marines or something. But it wasn’t,” he said in Lexington before departing for the bowl game.

The true freshman from Detroit has experienced even more hi-jinx in Nashville. Even though this year’s game is not near the beach in sunny Florida, the Wildcats still found some time to hit the SoundWaves waterpark at Gaylord Opryland.

“Everything’s been fun, just chilling with my teammates, going to the waterpark with my guy Kobi (Albert), just having fun outside of football with my buddies, it’s great,” said Walker.

His favorite attraction? The not-so-lazy river, or as he called it, “the uptempo river.”

“It’s like a jogging river,” he told KSR.

Nashville has become a frequent destination for the University of Kentucky. It’s a whole new experience for Iowa football players, who are completely embracing the boot-scootin’, cowboy-hat wearing lifestyle in the Music City. That life is not exactly what Walker grew up with in Detroit, but he’s loving spending time with his Kentucky football teammates.

“This is a way better experience than any I’ve ever had with any of my other teams, AAU, football or anything. I was ready for it, but this just blew my mind as soon as I got here.”
