Oscar Tshiebwe gives an update on Kentucky's many ankle injuries

What is it with this team and ankles? We knew TyTy Washington would be out tonight after landing awkwardly on his ankle at Auburn, but I don’t think anyone foresaw two more Wildcats going down in tonight’s overtime win vs. Mississippi State. Both Jacob Toppin and Oscar Tshiebwe came up limping in the second half and had to go to the locker room. Thankfully, both returned to action, and, according to Oscar, are fine.

“I had a little bit twist on defense,” Oscar said after the game. “I just moved my ankle a little bit so I went to retape. That’s why I left the court a little bit. Jacob, he had exactly the same but we’re good. We’re pretty good.”

When addressing the injuries, John Calipari took a more humorous approach, teasing Toppin for being overdramatic.

“I thought the way Jacob went down, he blew his Achilles, and all of sudden he’s back jumping around. I don’t know if he was embarrassed because he slipped and fell. They took him off in a stretcher and he came back and he’s the guy I put on the guy we had to stop. Did it with one Achilles.”

To be clear, Toppin did not exit the court on a stretcher. About a minute later, Oscar joined Toppin in the locker room after rolling awkwardly off his foot. With Mississippi State chipping away at Kentucky’s lead, Calipari sent Jai Lucas to the locker room to get his big man.

“I told one of the staff, go back and get Oscar. Where is he? Go back and get him. Again, I said this today, the game ended. I didn’t ask Oscar what was up. I looked at Jacob and teased him. ‘Do you have a blown-out Achilles? You went down like a sniper hit you. Because you slipped and were embarrassed? What happened here?’ And then I looked at TyTy and said, ‘Are you going to play this month?’ And that was about it. I didn’t ask them what hurt, what happened. I’m not the trainer. I’m don’t do it. I leave and they’ll tell me later what the deal is. In other words, I don’t know.”

Before you start freaking out at that “month” comment regarding TyTy, Oscar Tshiebwe’s here to make you feel better.

“I’m pretty sure TyTy is going to be with us in Kansas and we’re going to be ready.”

Can we have Oscar do the injury updates from now on?
