Kentucky Mr. Football Cameron Hergott Reclassifies to Repeat Senior Season

Cameron Hergott is the first high-profile athlete that will use newly passed Kentucky legislation to return to high school for one more year.

SB-128 passed this spring, allowing students to repeat the school year lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. The law passes the buck to individual school boards, which can then ratify the rule. Once given the green light by the Beechwood school board, the quarterback decided to run it back for one more year.

Hergott shared Mr. Football honors with Jager Burton in 2020 after the dual-threat quarterback passed for 2,467 yards and 26 touchdowns and rushed for 1,078 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. In December Hergott threw the go-ahead touchdown pass in overtime, ultimately propelling the Tigers past Lexington Christian (thanks to a blocked PAT) in a 24-23 win in the 2A State Championship, Beechwood’s first in class 2A. Hergott had 251 total yards and a pair of scores in the victory.

Despite his accomplishments, Hergott was overlooked on the recruiting trail. Undersized at just 6′ tall, he initially accepted a preferred walk-on offer at Akron. He also had the opportunity to be a PWO at Youngstown State.

“I was really blessed to get a walk-on (offer) from Akron, but I felt like with this opportunity in front of me, I feel like I can go a lot, I wouldn’t say bigger, but just really get a scholarship because that’s always been my dream,” Hergott told Fox-19.

“A big part of it is going to their camps. When coaches see you in person, that’s usually when offers start to come through. I didn’t get that opportunity this year. I worked my butt off the whole offseason and got a whole lot stronger, got a whole bigger, got a whole better and I didn’t get to show coaches that at their camps.”

Hergott missed an entire spring and summer on the camp circuit to prove to college coaches that he can play quarterback at the next level. Now with the title “Kentucky Mr. Football,” he will certainly have more coaches paying attention this summer as the accomplished prep athlete hits the reset button on his future.

He won Mr. Football.
He won a state championship.
But he wants something else.
