This year’s Super Bowl will kick off with a taste of Kentucky. Johnson County native Chris Stapleton will perform the National Anthem on the world’s biggest stage at Super Bowl LVII. State Farm Stadium in Arizona will host the the big game Feb. 12 on Fox. R&B singer Babyface is singing “America the Beautiful” and Rihanna is this year’s Super Bowl halftime performer.

For those who aren’t fans of his work, Stapleton is an eight-time Grammy winner who was raised in Eastern Kentucky. Last year he won three Grammys and was named CMA Male Vocalist of the Year.

Chris Stapleton is used to singing on big stages at football stadiums. Country music fans flocked to Lexington this summer for the first ever show at Kroger Field, “A Concert for Kentucky.” He was back in town just a few months later, once again raising money for charity. This time Mark Stoops introduced Chris Stapleton at the Kentucky Rising concert, a star-studded benefit for the Eastern Kentucky communities that were devastated by flooding in July.

There could be a couple of former Wildcats in Arizona for Stapleton’s performance. Former Consensus All-American Darian Kinnard is a reserve offensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs. Defensive lineman Phil Hoskins is also a member of the Chiefs’ practice squad. They will host this weekend’s AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals, who have one Wildcat on their practice squad, S Yusuf Corker. The winner will advance to Super Bowl LVII to take on the NFC Champion, either the Eagles or the 49ers.

Chris Stapleton is no stranger to the action on the gridiron. Once upon a time he was a head-buster at Johnson Central. When Tim Couch was an All-American in the mid-90s, the future No. 1 overall pick took a lick from the future country music superstar. See for yourself.
