Kentucky Offers Another Legacy Quarterback

Kentucky recently offered a scholarship to 2023 quarterback Jacob Jones. Jones is the son of former Wildcat quarterback Pookie Jones and will be a sophomore at West Jessamine High School.
Pookie Jones is a former Mr. Kentucky Football from Calloway County High School. He played QB in the early 90’s for Bill Curry. The elder Jones chose UK over the likes of Nebraska, Tennessee, and others. Pookie still remains as one of the most athletic passers in Kentucky history. I can’t imagine the numbers he would have put up if he played in Eddie Gran’s offense. He also played baseball for the Cats and later signed with the Colorado Rockies.
Jacob Jones is a 6’1, 180-pound signal caller whose stock is rising. I recently conducted a socially distanced email interview with Jacob. Here’s the Q&A:
Question: What did it mean to you to get a Kentucky offer?
Jacob Jones: Growing up as a kid watching Kentucky Football made me fall in love with the game. So then to get an offer meant everything.
Q: Were you surprised?
Jones: Coach Marrow’s offer took me by surprise. Now I can’t wait to put in the work.
Q: What did Pookie say when you were offered by Kentucky?
Jones: He said, “What?” Once it sunk in he congratulated me and said, “Let’s go to work.”
Q: What are the strengths of your game?
Jones: My knowledge of the game, my arm strength, my speed, and my work ethic.
Q: How were you developed as a quarterback?
Jones: QB drills, speed training, and studying the game of football.
Q: Name your goals for your high school career.
Jones: Win state, be Mr. Football, and be the best student-athlete and teammate.
Q: Does the fact that your dad played at Kentucky help the Wildcat’s cause?
Jones: Yes because it would be an honor to play at the same school as my dad.
Q: What will you be looking for in a college program?
Jones: To improve my skills to play at the next level.
Q: Tell the folks who Jacob Jones is as a quarterback.
Jones: I am a leader. I will be the first one on the field and the last one off. I am a winner. I am the quarterback you want on your team.
Kentucky could be having a run on legacy quarterbacks. First, there was Beau Allen. Now the Wildcats are the first to offer Jacob Jones. I will be closely following Jones’ development. He’s mature and focused beyond his years, which is no surprise given his parents. Expect many more offers to follow when football is resumed. But, UK stays with trend here and is the first to offer a talented player with an extremely high ceiling.
