Nick Roush on QBs: Devin Leary Vs Florida, Graham Mertz Vs Kentucky

Devin Leary has not lost a game since he became the Kentucky starting quarterback. His mettle will be tested this Saturday at Kroger Field when the Wildcats host the Florida Gators. Kickoff is at noon on ESPN.

When he’s not dropping dimes on campus, he’s also earning money with various NIL deals. KSR was on the scene during his latest commercial shoot with Morgan & Morgan. You will soon be seeing the Kentucky quarterback on billboards across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Leary was kind enough to lend some time to this talking head to talk to KSR about his game, and maybe even more importantly, his hat collection. We also discussed why he sometimes throws the ball without the seams. On a more important note, Leary feels 100% confident operating within Liam Coen‘s offense.

“At this point, I’m locked in with the system,” said the Kentucky quarterback. “I understand each and every week what (plays) we can pull, what we can carry over, and now getting into SEC play, making sure that we understand what we’re doing. We understand our bread-and-butter plays and there’s certain plays that we can throw in as a mix-up. At this point we’re all settled in the offense, but now it’s time to really crisp things up and define the details.”

The details have not always been crisp. Against Vanderbilt there were dropped passes and Leary dropped a snap. Kentucky has been able to overcome those mistakes with explosive plays and impressive throws. Leary does not hesitate when his number is called.

“Honestly it just kicks into my mind, if there’s an opportunity to make a play, that’s why I play football is to make a play. Whether it’s Barion Brown running down the sideline or Tayvion Robinson in the seam, if they’re putting the ball in my hands to make a play or get a first down or score, in my mind it just clicks in my head that I can do it.”
