University of Kentucky sophomore golfer Cullan Brown is putting on a show at the Barbasol Championship.

Following an impressive 5-under in the third round this morning, Brown now sits at 9-under overall and is currently tied for 43rd overall heading into the final round of the event.

Brown, a graduate of Lyon County High School in Eddyville, KY, is now only eight shots off the lead.

After his round-three 67, Brown told Eli Gehn of LEX 18 that he’s just excited to have some fun with other talented golfers.

“It’s just another week out here, it’s just golf. There’s so many logistics that go into the week,” he said. “So really, to me, the golf is just the relaxing part… It’s been great, it’s just been relaxing.”

While the purse is $3,500,000, Brown, an amateur, is unable to accept any money no matter how he finishes tomorrow. With three years left of eligibility at Kentucky, he says he would never want to risk that, no matter how great it’d be.

“Nah, [winning money] hasn’t crossed my mind at all. It’s really not a thought I’ve had,” he said. “This week has been so hectic and busy with everything else that I haven’t had the time to sit around and reflect. It certainly would be nice to accept that, but I would in no way want to jeopardize my next three years of college golf. I wouldn’t trade those for anything.”

In an interview with Larry Vaught, Brown said that he’s just appreciative of the opportunity.

“From somebody coming in from my perspective as a college amateur who wasn’t even expecting the opportunity, just to be here is such a success,” he said. “It speaks volumes about the great fortune and great support I have had in golf. It is just fantastic to be here to see some faces and names and talk to people you have looked up to your whole life and have followed along. It is phenomenal.”

In his first year at Kentucky, Brown was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team after garnering four top-20 finishes in eight spring events. He tied for fifth at Mason Rudolph, tied for 16th at the Schenkel Invitational, tied for 18th in the final regular-season event at Shoal Creek, and then tied for ninth at the SEC Championship.

In 2016, Brown was the KHSAA State individual champion en route to winning Kentucky Player of the Year honors. He was also the runner-up in both 2015 and 2017.
