John Calipari and the Kentucky men’s basketball staff have been quite busy over the last couple of weeks. With the recruiting live period in effect, Cal and company are traveling all across the country to check in on current commits and their top undecided targets.

Already this week, members of the UK staff have been in to see two of their favorite 2024 recruits: five-star guards Ian Jackson and Johnuel “Boogie” Fland. Jackson might be Kentucky’s top overall high school junior prospect, with Calipari and assistant Orlando Antigua visiting him on Tuesday.

But the rest of the staff made sure to check up on arguably the second-most important player: five-star shooting guard Tre Johnson. According to recruiting analyst Ani Umana, Kentucky was in to see Johnson at his high school, Lake Highlands (TX), on Tuesday. Members of the LSU coaching staff were also there.

Johnson is one of eight ’24 recruits who has announced a public offer from the Wildcats. Calipari was in to watch him play last Monday, as well. UK’s new assistant coach, KT Turner, is the lead recruiter for Johnson.

While Jackson appears to be at the top of Kentucky’s Big Board, it’s Johnson who is the consensus No. 1 recruit. As of Tuesday morning, all four major recruiting services have him slotted as the top overall prospect. Johnson was one of a handful of ’24 players who earned an offer from UK on the very first day that contact was allowed in mid-June.

Johnson told KSR back in July at the Nike Peach Jam Invitational that he was “surprised and honored” to know that Kentucky is focusing on him. He also holds offers from the likes of Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas, Duke, Auburn, LSU, North Carolina, Arkansas, and several others. Johnson has already taken an official visit this month to Texas with one planned at the beginning of October to Baylor.
