Kentucky Softball won their game against UIC 11-0 on Sunday in Norman, Oklahoma. After a rough start to the weekend, the Cats came out stronger on Saturday and Sunday.

Cats got off to a rough start

On Saturday afternoon, UK faced UIC first. Vanessa Nesby shined as she went 3-4 from the plate and scored two of the Cats’ seven runs.

An RBI double from junior Erin Coffel also gave the edge for UK and secured the game for the Cats to win 7-1 in their first match-up on Saturday over UIC.

Kentucky faces Sooners again after win

Right after the win, Kentucky went up against No.1 Oklahoma again for the night cap. The Cats held the Sooners to fewer runs scored than in their first game, but they still struggled from the mound and on defense.

Oklahoma came out swinging and did not disappoint as they got an early 7-0 lead.

Sophomore Alexia Lacatena and graduate student Kennedy Sullivan took the mound for UK. Lacatena gave up five runs while Sullivan held the Sooners to five hits and gave up two runs.

In the top of the fifth senior Rylea Smith hit a single to get on base as the score remained 7-0. Lauryn Borzilleri stepped into the box and hit an RBI single to bring Smith in making the score 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Neither team was able to bring another run in and the game closed out with another loss to Oklahoma.

One last game for the Cats

The Cats had one more game going into Sunday in Norman as they were set to face UIC one final time. Lacatena took the mound to start for Kentucky.

Although neither team was able to bring in a run in the first inning, the Cats had a huge second inning. Grace Lorsung hit one outside the park right off the bat in the bottom of the second putting the Cats up 1-0.

The scoring was not done yet after graduate student Kayla Kowalik hit an RBI single to give UK a 4-0 lead going into the third.

Coffel was the star for the Cats on Sunday as she hit a grand slam in the third to put Kentucky up 10-0.

Lacatena held UIC to zero runs at the top of the fourth while junior Meeko Harrison scored another one for Kentucky making the lead 11-0. Stephanie Schoonover relieved Lacatena who gave up zero runs going into the fifth.

Mercy rule win for UK

Due to the mercy rule after maintaining a lead of eight or more through the fifth inning, Kentucky beat UIC 11-0 on Sunday.

Even though the weekend was shaky at some points, the Cats were able to end it on a high note as they went 2-2 overall in Norman.

Looking ahead to the upcoming week, Kentucky Softball will host Dayton on Wednesday at 5:00 pm for their first home game of the season.
