Kentucky’s passing game future appears to be very bright at the moment. The No. 1 reason for that is due to the youthful talent at receiver.

In their first season on campus, Barion Brown and Dane Key combined to record 76 receptions for 1,076 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Cats have two young players that can be legit No. 1 receivers in any offense. That is a great building block.

However, the depth in this position room is becoming thin quickly

On Monday, redshirt junior DeMarcus Harris and sophomore Chauncey Magwood announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal on Dec. 5. Elsewhere, redshirt freshman Chris Lewis also insinuated that he could be moving into the portal. That would leave Kentucky with seven scholarship receivers for the bowl game.

Meanwhile, Tayvion Robinson is a fourth-year senior as the Virginia Tech transfer could move on after the season. Tae Tae Crumes just finished his fourth year at Kentucky and could be a candidate to move on. Things are getting thin in Scott Woodward’s position room quickly.

Shamar Porter and Anthony Brown are the only two commits in Kentucky’s class at wide receiver. Both top-500 prospects will have a great chance to play early next season in Lexington. But this position needs more bodies.

Four-star prospect Karmello English just included Kentucky in his top five. Ardell Banks is an Ohio receiver that Vince Marrow is currently pursuing. Demitrius Bell is another Middle Tennessee native that could be added to Kentucky’s class.

Look for the Wildcats to add at least one and quite possibly two more wideouts to their 2023 high school class before pen goes to paper on National Signing Day (Dec. 21). A trip to the transfer portal might also need to be looked at.

Brown and Key will be the stars for Kentucky’s offense next season, but the dynamic young players will need some help. The recent recruiting work at the wide receiver position has been very solid for the Wildcats but there is still some work to be done.

Recruiting never stops.
