Before we start repacking our bags for Cleveland, let's go over a few notes... --- Our buddy Mark Titus is back with 20 Tournament Observations at Grantland. Predictably, two of them are about Kentucky. Here's my favorite:
18. Instead of the usual tournament, the NCAA should’ve made Kentucky play each of the 67 other teams. Assuming Kentucky doesn’t completely crap the bed, there are only a handful of teams in the country that could take down the Cats. And Kentucky has to play only two of them, at most. Villanova and Virginia are out, Arizona and Wisconsin will have to play each other before the Final Four, and the same goes for Duke and Gonzaga. This is why I say we take the selection committee’s 1-68 list and Street Fighter this sumbitch. Kentucky starts at team 68 and moves up the list with each win until it reaches the top. And what happens when it runs the table and ends up 101-0?6 It goes up against the final boss, which is – you guessed it – the Philadelphia 76ers.
NOT THAT DEBATE AGAIN! --- Meanwhile, if you needed further proof that postseason coaching awards are all about reporters voting for their friends, today's USBWA National Coach of the Year announcement is one of them. Virginia's Tony Bennett won the award over Calipari, which is a total crock of crap considering Cal's got an undefeated team still in the tournament, while Bennett's 30-4 Cavaliers just lost in the round of 32. It's worth noting that neither Mike Kryzewlrkjslkjr, Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan nor Jerry Tarkanian have won the award either, so really, media bias gonna media bias. Sad, but true. I mean, look at the 2014-2015 USBWA officers: Screen Shot 2015-03-23 at 1.40.38 PM Like that one-two punch of President and Vice President would ever let Calipari win. --- Speaking of coaching news, Ben Howland is in at Mississippi State, which is just really odd to me. Kudos to Mississippi State for putting forth the interest and effort in a quality basketball hire, but what's in it for Howland? Does he really need a job so badly that he's giving up living in Los Angeles to move to Starkville, Mississippi? I hate to break it to him, but the "Cotton District" looks much better on Google than it does in real life. --- Shoutout to Jill and Greg Hamilton, who are such big Kentucky fans that they changed the time of their wedding on Saturday to accommodate tip time of the Kentucky/Cincinnati game: IMG_2011 Clearly, you two have your priorities in order. Well done. Your guests surely thank you. --- Yesterday, UK Hoops was upset by Dayton, and they were without one of their stars, senior Azia Bishop. Bishop was suspended from Sunday's game for breaking curfew, and this afternoon, she issued an apology via the university:
I had an amazing four years at the University of Kentucky. My season did not end the way I wanted it to, as I was suspended for Sunday's game due to a curfew violation. I had a lapse in focus and it's a decision I will regret for the rest of my life. However, it's a lesson learned and I respect Coach Mitchell's decision. This will only better me as a person in the future and shape me to become a woman of substance and who Coach Mitchell has taught me to be. I would like to thank the Big Blue Nation for all of their support and love that they have shown me over the last four years. I love everyone associated with the Big Blue Nation and the University of Kentucky, and I want to thank you all. — Azia Bishop
What an unfortunate end to a great college career. Best of luck to Azia. --- Finally, there's been a lot of talk about Willie's dunk, but Michael Huang's time lapse shot of it is my favorite so far: [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="608"] Photo by Michael Huang[/caption] Good job, Michael. Keep that lucky Jorts shirt on in Cleveland!
