Detroit has turned into a fertile recruiting area for Kentucky football. The Wildcats will enter the 2022 season with six scholarship players from the area. Deondre Buford, Jeremy Flax, and DeAndre Square will be featured in starting roles. Despite some coaching staff turnover, that area remains important to the recruiting operation in Lexington.

Vince Marrow has taken over the recruiting duties in Detroit and has Kentucky in the hunt for Detroit Cass Tech star Jalen Thompson who is a top-250 recruit. However, his teammate is creating quite the buzz this week on the recruiting trail.

Khamari Anderson is the No. 519 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. The tight end committed to Cincinnati on Feb. 3 to play for the Bearcats who will be making the move to the Big 12 very soon. However, the recruitment has not slowed down. Anderson announced four public offers — Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan State, and Minnesota — on Wednesday night after reaffirming his commitment to Cincinnati.

Under Luke Fickell, the Bearcats have also recruited the Detroit area very well. Sauce Gardner went from a low three-star recruit in the class of 2019 out of Detroit Martin Luther King and turned into a top-five selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. Cincinnati is heavily involved in the area and appears to be going up against Kentucky for another recruit.

We’ve seen both the Bearcats and Wildcats battle in the Buckeye State for targets, and there could be many recruits who’s final decision comes down to staying home to play at Nippert Stadium or to travel down I-75 to play in the SEC. That recruiting rivalry is now leaking into Michigan.

Only time will tell if Kentucky can gain traction on Khamari Anderson as the Detroit prospect is holding firm in his commitment to Cincinnati.
