Week 10 of the KHSAA football slate decided several district championships and saw two undefeated seasons come to an end. Here are some notable scores/stories from this week’s high school football action:

No. 24 Bryan Station (8-1) def. No. 13 Madison Central (7-2) 21-13

With three minutes remaining in the only top-25 matchup of the week, Madison Central would cross the end zone to cut Station’s lead to one. Mike Holcomb rolled the dice and went for two directly after, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

On the ensuing drive, the Defenders were in a precarious position on third and one. Phillip Hawkins made the gutsy call to pass the ball with a minute remaining; quarterback Trenton Cutwright found Javoen Hurt for the game-sealing score.

“You’ve got to find ways to win,” Hawkins said post-game. “I’m happy that [we] won.”

With the victory, not only does Station win their district, but they also secured home-field advantage for the first two rounds of the KHSAA playoffs. “Home field—I feel like it makes you play better,” Hurt said after the win. “Being in front of your home crowd, you’ve got better support.”

Station has one more regular-season game against city rival Dunbar this Friday at 6:30 p.m. on their home turf.

No. 25 Ballard (6-3) def. Scott County (5-4) 24-21

Scott County was without their star running back Montego Jones against the Bruins Friday night, and Ballard took advantage of it. A late fourth-quarter stand by the Ballard defense sealed the deal for the Bruin’s second-straight victory.

Ballard quarterback Tristan Hawkins finished with 234 all-purpose yards, including a 58-yard touchdown connection to Chaunte Marrero over the middle.

“We’ve been preaching if they’re playing off in the middle, give our guy a chance,” said Hawkins. “Chaunte’s a playmaker, so get the ball to him and let him do what he does.”

The three-point margin of victory Friday night was the closest Ballard has won by all season. The Bruins had won by 18 in week four against Franklin County—their closest victory until they faced the Cardinals.

“Scott County’s a phenomenal team,” Bruins head coach Adrian Morton said. “I told [my team] that’s a playoff-type game. We’re going to get better having played a close game like that and finding a way to win at the end.”

Franklin County (6-3) def. No. 18 Central (6-4) 35-6

Central’s three-game winning streak came to an end Friday night in decisive fashion, losing to Franklin County 35-6. Central freshman Cortez Stone was pit against the world. 139 of Central’s 188 total yards came through Stone on the ground while their passing game was essentially nonexistent.

Kentucky commit Kaden Moorman had a field day against the Yellow Jacket defense. He carried 20 rushes for 153 yards and two scores on top of two receptions for 16 yards and another score.

Flyers quarterback Gavin Hurst finished 11-18 with 133 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

While the loss brings Central’s regular season to an end, Franklin County will head to Berea this Friday to battle Madison Southern in their season finale before the KHSAA playoffs kick into full gear.

Murray (6-2) def. No. 11 Mayfield (8-1) 25-21

Undefeated no more.

Murray only amassed 222 yards on offense Friday night against the No. 11 team in KHSAA—all of which came on the ground.

The Sokolowski brothers, Rowdy and Gage combined for 178 rushing yards against the Cardinals. Rowdy scored three of the Tigers’ four touchdowns on the night. The only other score was by Kainoa Olive, who finished the game with eight rushes for 19 yards.

The deciding factor came on the defensive end of the ball for Murray, where Caleb Gill recovered a fumble, taking it 65-yards and setting up the Tigers in Mayfield territory.

Murray dominated the possession game, out-possessing the Cardinals 33-15 (minutes) Friday night.

Metcalfe County (6-3) def. Green County (8-1)

Mayfield wasn’t alone Friday night. Green County was also upset, this time at the hands of Metcalfe County.

Green County was previously one of five undefeated teams in KHSAA’s 2A division. With Mayfield going down as well, LCA, Beechwood and Middlesboro are the remaining three blemish-free programs heading into the final week of the regular season.
