The Kroger KSR Game of the Week is heading to the mountains on Friday. The Johnson Central Golden Eagles travel to Whitesburg to take on the Letcher County Central Cougars.

Friday’s matchup features two top-10 teams in 4A. Letcher County Central is 6-1. It lost 48-7 to 1A powerhouse Pikeville. The Cougars are coming off a 54-18 win over Clay County. The Golden Eagles are 5-2 riding a three-game winning streak with victories over Harlan County, Perry Central, and Clay County.

LCC head coach Junior Matthews’ team is averaging 38 points per game. It’s led by quarterback Carson Adams. The all-purpose playmaker has thrown for 1,184 yards and 12 touchdowns. Adams is equally effective in the run game. He’s carried the football 76 times for 736 yards and 11 scores. Nicholas Haning averages 18 yards per reception and paces LCC with 26 catches and five touchdowns. Keaton Day is the Cougars’ leading tackler with 76 stops including four for loss. Koby Johnson ranks second with 62 tackles.

Johnson Central is a mountain power with two state championships in 2016 and 2018. The Golden Eagles’ legendary head coach Jim Matney passed away in September. Matney was a passionate advocate for the mountains. The head coach’s influence transcended athletics. His loss was mourned across the Commonwealth

Johnson Central is 5-2. The Golden Eagles are led by UK offensive line commit Grant Bingham. Its offense is run-heavy and directed by two players that have exceeded 400 yards for the season. Zack McCoart and Carter Conley have rushed for 427 and 402 yards, respectively. Mason LeMaster’s 52 tackles are tops on the defense. Jesse McCoy ranks second with 29 stops.

Bragging rights in the mountains and playoff ramifications are on the line in this key 4A matchup. Should be a fun night in the mountains.
