Kroger's Kentucky High School Football Rundown - Week 7

On3 imageby:KSR10/01/22

Week 7 action was wild across the Bluegrass State on Friday night. The No. 21 Southwestern Warriors won an intense battle against the No. 27 North Laurel Jaguars in what was the first tightly-contested Kroger KSR Game of the Week matchup this season. KSR was in London, Georgetown, and Bracken County to catch all of the Friday Night Lights action.

Check out the recaps below along with a statewide scoreboard thanks to our friends at Kroger.

Scott County 43, Great Crossing 0

By DANIEL HAGER

Upon the opening of Great Crossing three miles away from Scott County, a heated rivalry was born. In their first-ever matchup in 2019, Scott County absolutely thrashed the Warhawks 72-7 in a “welcome to the big leagues” moment. Steadily, over their last three matchups, the Warhawks have crept closer and closer to that program-changing win. The last two matchups were decided by eight points and two points, and many in the Warhawk program thought Friday night could be the night they finally got that elusive Battle of the Birds win.

However, this was not the case. Scott County cruised to a 43-0 win.

Scott County fans packed Great Crossing’s beautiful new stadium and brought a huge crowd to cheer on their Cardinals. The hype was real before the game, as it seemed the entire city of Georgetown made their way to the Birds Nest for this one.

Things started off well for the Warhawks, who forced a turnover on downs on Scott County’s first possession. After failing to put some points on the board after taking over at midfield, Scott County drove all the way down the field and got on the board first thanks to Cardinal quarterback Andrew Hickey’s first touchdown run of the season.

Scott County Receiver Brown Has Breakout Game

Coming into Friday night’s contest, Scott County senior receiver DaQuis Brown had a relatively quiet season, rushing for one touchdown and catching only two passes for 13 yards. After Friday night’s contest, he became the talk of all of Georgetown. Brown absolutely carved the Warhawk defense for 74 yards and two impressive scores, one of which where he totally “mossed” the Warhawk receiver for a SportsCenter Top 10 worthy touchdown.

“I had to go get it”, Brown said with a smirk. “I used to go to Great Crossing, so I had to make sure I came down with that.”

An Andrew Hickey passing touchdown to Ellis Huguely and rushing touchdowns from Thomas Feickert and Aaron Klein wrapped this one up.

Coach McKee Proud of his Players

The 2022 high school football season is coach Jim McKee’s 26th season at Scott County. McKee brought a state championship to the school in 2013 and is a beloved member of the community. He was proud of how his team bounced back after a tough loss to Frederick Douglass in last week’s Kroger KSR Game of the Week.

“They’re in the top four or five teams we’ve ever gone against, so it wasn’t that rough,” McKee said about Frederick Douglass. “They’re better than us right now. Our kids bounced back, and we played well tonight.”

His team didn’t just play well, they absolutely dominated.

“All ten games are good opportunities for us, and I knew our kids would be ready to play.”

The Warhawks, who saw their undefeated season come to an end, now look to regroup for next week as they take on 2-4 Montgomery County. The Cardinals, who got their season back on track Friday night, look to keep their momentum rolling against 0-7 Grant County next Friday.

Paris 14, Bracken County 8

By TROY HOWELL

With all eyes on the Paris offense (which leads Class 1A in scoring averaging at 47.0 points) and Bracken County’s defense (which leads Class A in points allowed at 10.5), it was the Greyhound defense that shined brightest. Paris held the Polar Bears to only eight points. Sophomore Elijah Webb, the state’s leader in interceptions, picked off a pass to seal the game. He also scored the go-ahead touchdown.

After a scoreless first half, Paris started the second half near midfield after a short kickoff. The Greyhounds took advantage with an efficient drive capped off by Darian Bell’s touchdown run. Kaden Fredrick found Jakari Ransom for the two-point conversion.

Bracken County converted a controversial 4th-and-a-foot in their own territory, eventually scoring a Dylan Teegarden touchdown. His two-point run tied the game at 8 midway through the third quarter. He had a long run to set up the touchdown.

Paris countered with an incredible touchdown catch from Webb on a pass from Fredrick to give the Greyhounds a 14-8 lead. Bracken’s Cody Lippert picked off the two-point conversion.

Zion Webb’s sack on 4th-and-2 turned the ball over to Paris on the Polar Bears’ 40-yard line.

Paris fumbled though, and Bracken recovered on their own 20 with 7:30 remaining in the game. But Elijah Webb’s seventh pick of the season came when Bracken County was forced to attempt a rare pass on third and long. The Greyhounds ran out the clock for the victory.

It was an important district victory for the young Paris Greyhounds (5-1) who slowed down one of the best starts in Bracken County (5-1) history.

Historic Night

Homer Goins was in attendance and tossed the coin tonight. He coached the Paris undefeated state title team in 1973, the first of the ‘Hounds three-state titles.

After visiting historic Sower Field in Frankfort last week, it was another fun trip back in time tonight. Blanton Collier Stadium opened in 1945 and is still going strong. The homecoming crowd made for a fun atmosphere tonight. If you haven’t made it out to Paris yet, make plans to attend if you like classic venues and exciting small school football.

Kroger is a staple in your hometown community just like high school football. There’s nothing quite like Friday nights in the Bluegrass. We are honored to share this journey with Kroger and you for the third consecutive season.
