KSR GAMEDAY: Kentucky looks to win 4th straight game as Texas comes to Rupp Arena
Good morning, folks! It’s Gameday once again for the Kentucky men’s basketball program. Today’s opponent? The Texas Longhorns (11-7; 2-3 SEC). Here’s what you need to know.
Kentucky is coming off three straight double-digit comeback victories, the last two featuring memorable finishes on the road. A week ago today, Mark Pope‘s crew beat LSU at the buzzer after trailing by 18 points. A few days later, they overcame a 17-point hole to sneak out a win over a ranked Tennessee team. But UK finally returns to Lexington this evening for a showdown with the Longhorns at Rupp Arena (7:00 p.m. ET | SEC Network). The ‘Cats will look to win four games in a row for just the second time this season.
They’ll have to do so without Jayden Quaintance once again, who will miss his fourth straight game as he continues to rehab his knee. Pope ruled the first lottery pick out for tonight’s game during his press conference yesterday. That hasn’t seemed to slow the team down, though — UK is 3-0 since Quaintance’s knee began to swell up. Denzel Aberdeen turning into a star these last two games sure has helped.
Kentucky will be expected to win tonight, too. Our friends at BetMGM have the ‘Cats as a 6.5-point favorite as of this morning. KenPom and BartTorvik also project a win for the home team. This will mark just the fourth-ever matchup between these two schools and the second at Rupp. Kentucky beat Texas in Hawaii in 1993 before taking down the Longhorns again in 2014 during the SEC/Big 12 Challenge in Lexington. Texas won the first-ever SEC showdown between these two teams last season in Austin.
Texas is a top-end offensive group, one that ranks first nationally in free-throw rate with a top 15 offensive rebounding mark. Four Longhorns average more than 13 points per game, including seven-footer Matas Vokietaitis, who leads the country in individual free-throw rate. Texas has a couple of good SEC wins, but a couple of tough losses, as well. This will be a Quad 2 opportunity for Kentucky.

Let’s talk some football, too!
Will Stein took the podium for nearly 40 minutes on Monday afternoon to answer questions from the local media. We’ve been combing through everything he said ever since.
The former Oregon OC has essentially completed his first roster going into spring practice. Stein brought in 34 transfers and 15 high school signees, with the potential for another addition or two. Click the link here to see the current state of the 2026 roster.

Buzz for Stein’s first season in Lexington continues to grow, especially after Indiana just won its first-ever national football championship.
“Yeah, it can be done,” Stein said about the possibility of winning a title at UK. “That’s the exciting part about college football now. A team like Indiana is in the national championship game. And it’s no fluke that they have a real team. I lost to them twice. Got my butt whooped two weeks ago by them. They are a real team with real players and real coaches… You can be a young coach, an old coach. If you are not adapting, you are lost; like, you are not going to win. And that’s the goal from us as a coaching staff.”
In order to help make those title dreams a reality, Stein is a big believer in having a qualified general manager working behind the scenes. That’s why one of the first things he did as Kentucky head coach was hire Pat Biondo and Pete Nochta to serve as GM and assistant GM, respectively. “It’s a giant role in college football that you cannot run a program without,” Stein said of having a general manager. “There’s just no way in hell.”
With a GM helping run the show, it frees up Stein and his staff to hit the recruiting trail. They did a ton of that on Monday and Tuesday, Stein even making his way up to Cincinnati for a face-to-face meeting with four-star quarterback Matt Ponatoski. The new era of Kentucky football sure seems to be taking steps in the right direction. KSR’s Nick Roush and Adam Luckett talked about the ‘Cats roster and expectations going into 2026 during their latest episode of 11 Personnel, which you can watch below.
Another All-American nod for Tyler Bell
The Bat Cats have a legitimate college star going into this season. Starting shortstop Tyler Bell is back for year two in Lexington, and he picked up his second preseason All-American honor on Tuesday, this one coming from D1Baseball. Bell was a true freshman star in 2025, batting .296 with an OPS over .900. He led the ‘Cats in doubles (17) and runs (51) while also adding 11 steals and 35 walks/HBPs. His 10 home runs set a UK freshman record.
This was a kid who was once a second-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft before Nick Mingione convinced him to play college ball at Kentucky. That is looking like the right decision as Bell is moving into first-round pick territory. He’ll be the star for the Wildcats as they start the season ranked among the Top 25. Baseball is only a few weeks away.
I’ll leave you with this…
Absolute cinema. No notes. Go ‘Cats.
