KSR Preps Preview : Week Three

KSR Preps Game of the Week
Trinity (2-0) vs. Lafayette (2-0)
The Lafayette Generals look to continue their undefeated season against the #1 team in the state the Trinity Shamrocks.This match up features two of the best teams in class 6A, with Lafayette being rated #3 in the state.
The Shamrocks have started the 2016 season on a role in two early match ups against Tennessee powerhouses, Ensworth and Brentwood Academy. Last week Trinity produced great numbers on the ground against Brentwood, finishing the game with 386 rushing yards. Senior running back Roderick Thomas lead the way with 157 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.
The X factor for Trinity has been Senior QB Spencer Blackburn, he showed his superior athleticism last week rushing for 181 yards and a touchdown against Brentwood.
The Shamrocks will lean on their big offensive tackles, 6'5 Cole Spencer and 6'3 Robert Crawford, this week against a Lafayette defense that has been solid in run defense thus far.
The Shamrocks have performed well defensively in their first two games only allowing 28 points total but they have not faced a quarterback as explosive as Walker Wood this season. In last year's defeat of Lafayette the Shamrocks did a great job of limiting Wood, allowing just 14 yards on the ground and 128 yards throwing.
Trinity Sophomore defensive end Stephon Herron Jr. has offers from Ohio State, Kentucky, Louisville, Tenneesee, etc. Herron Jr. has shown a lot of interest to Louisville and Ohio State in the early stages of his recruitment. Herron Jr. will play a big role Friday night as he tries to contain Wood from extending plays down the field.
Lafayette is coming off a big win against 3A powerhouse Boyle County, UK Commit and Lafayette QB Walker Wood had a huge game against the Rebels rushing for 188 yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior Receiver DeKwan Edwards also had an impressive showing, catching 2 passes for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Wood had an outstanding 63 yard run that earned him the #6 spot on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays.

Lafayette is looking to avenge a 70-14 loss to Trinity last year, in that game Lafayette was shut down offensively. They scored twice on two long kickoff returns by Mason Alstatt who plays for Wofford now. Trinity held the General offense to just 178 yards of total offense.
The Generals have not yet faced anyone this season that compares to Trinity's size, speed, or discipline, but they have been impressive in their first two games.
Lafayette must bear down on the defensive line and commit to stopping the Shamrocks powerful running game if they stand a chance. UK target Jedrick Wills has been playing defensive end this year as well as his normal offensive line duties. He will provide the necessary size it takes to slow down an offensive line as good as Trinity has this year.
The Generals have a cast of receivers that all have big play ability. #17 Matthew Guilfoil has been one of Wood's most reliable targets this year, catching anything that comes his way. #8 Quinton Brown can make plays down the middle of the field and must do so on Friday night.
In order for Lafayette to be successful this week they must deliver big plays early, in a game like this it is of up most importance to gain confidence early. Wood is too explosive of a player to be shut down completely but he will need big games from his supporting cast if the Generals hope to pull off an upset.
Eli's Pick - Lafayette is a true 6A state title contender regardless of what happens on Friday night but Trinity has faced tougher competition this season and as a result the Shamrocks are in great position to leave Lexington with a win. I believe Walker Wood's play making ability will keep this game close but Trinity pulls away late to win by two scores.
Other Games to Watch
St.Xavier (1-0) vs. Bowling Green (2-0) - St.X is coming off a huge comeback win against Lexington Catholic last week. Senior RB Sam Taylor looks to duplicate his performance this week against the defending 5A State Champions Bowling Green. The Purples have a Senior RB of their own, Navy Commit Jamale Carothers has started off his season in excellent fashion rushing for 113 yards and a TD in Bowling Green's 42-22 victory against Christian County.
Scott County (2-0) vs. Highlands (1-1) - Scott County has kicked off their 2016 season with two straight blowout wins. Their running game has been unstoppable up to this point, gaining 282 yards in a 48-19 victory over Pulaski County. Highlands is trying to bounce back this week after losing to Campbell County in a close game. QB Brady Gosney needs to have a big game if the Bluebirds want to pull off the upset.
Danville (2-0) vs. Boyle County (0-2) - Everyone in Titletown's favorite week has arrived. Boyle County has not started their season the way Coach Chuck Smith would have liked but that is thrown out the window this week. This is a rivalry game that Boyle has won 7 of the last 8 match ups. Danville may have what it takes this year to finally win against their hometown rival.
Paintsville (2-0) vs. Pikeville (2-0) - These two teams have produced some classic games in the last few years and this year won't be any different. Paintsville's Kent Phelps has been dominate early this season and must continue that if the Tigers hope to avenge last years playoff loss to Pikeville.
If you are in the Lexington area come out to Lafayette for some of the best high school football the state has to offer.
