KSR Preps Game of the Week
St.Xavier (0-0) vs. Lexington Catholic (1-0)
Lexington Catholic's annual Traditional Bank Bluegrass Bowl will feature two private school powerhouses in the night cap of their double header.
St.X opens their 2016 season tomorrow night after having a bye in week one. St.X will be without its starting Quarterback Desmond Ridder while he is serving a two game suspension. Junior QB Jack Albers will take his place under center for the Tigers, Albers showed nice accuracy and arm strength in St.X's scrimmage against Simon Kenton.
The Tigers Senior RB Sam Taylor is a shifty runner between the tackles and will run straight through a defender if he has the chance. St.X will hand the ball to Taylor early and often trying to wear down the Knights.
In years past when St.X has faced off against Lexington Catholic the Tigers have controlled the line of scrimmage and played hard nose defense to defeat the Knights. The game plan for the Tigers should not be much different this year especially considering their size advantage on both lines.
Lexington Catholic kicked off their 2016 season with a blowout win beating Boone County 41-18, in his first start Dameon Jones exploded for the Knights rushing for three touchdowns and catching another. Jones has an offer from Morehead State.
Not all was good for the Knights in their blowout win, Senior Linebackers Eric Foster and Austin Lauterbach both suffered knee injuries that will keep them sidelined indefinitely. Seniors Austin Pedroche and Jack Fagot have to make big plays for a young defense that just lost two of their best players.
Senior QB Kirk Fagot has full control of the Knights offense this year after a junior season in which he threw for 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns in 8 games played. The Knights reload at the receiver position after losing their four starters to graduation, Ben Buchignani and Sam Hodges need to make big plays down the field if Lexington Catholic is going to pull out a win.
For Lexington Catholic the key to this game is sustaining long drives that result in points early in the game, establishing confidence can be huge in a game like this one. If the Knights turn the ball over early or miss key opportunities it will be hard for them to recover against a 6A school that has much more depth.
Eli's Pick - This is a tough one for me as a Lex Cath graduate but the depth and size that St.X has will be too much for the Knights even in their bowl game, St.X by two touchdowns.
Other Games to Watch
Ryle (1-0) vs. Henry Clay (0-0) - The Raiders and Blue Devils will kick off the Traditional Bank Bluegrass Bowl at Lexington Catholic on Friday night. Ryle QB Tanner Morgan performed well in this bowl last season and looks to continue that against a Henry Clay team that will start, Tim Couch's nephew, Junior QB Greg Couch for the first time in his career.
DeSales (1-0) vs. Butler (1-0) - DeSales has opened their season in fantastic fashion, holding their opponents scoreless in their scrimmage and week one game. They'll continue their hot start against an improved Butler team that beat Meade County 20-13.
Lousiville Central (0-1) vs. Corbin (1-0)- This match up features two 3A state title contenders that finished right behind Belfry in the chase for a state title in each of the last three seasons. Central must rebound quickly after losing 21-20 to DuPont Manual if they want to have any chance of catching Belfry this season.
Lafayette (1-0) vs. Boyle County (0-1) - The Rebels of Boyle County struggled in their week one loss to North Hardin but have a perfect chance this week in their Rebel Bowl to make a statement in class 3A. Lafayette started their season strong in a blowout win, Coach Eric Shaw hopes to see the Generals play even better this week.
Belfry (0-0) vs. Tates Creek (0-1) - Life doesn't get any easier for Tates Creek this week as they face off against 3A defending State Champs Belfry in the Pike County Bowl. Cole Bentley and Austin Doctson will lead Belfry's big offensive line against a Tates Creek defense that allowed 631 yards of total offense against Scott County.
Southwestern (1-0) vs. Danville (1-0) - In one of the week's best games Southwestern is hoping to prove itself as a legitimate 5A title contender against a Danville team that many are underestimating even after an impressive 2015 season. This game will be filled with powerful offenses and will most likely result in a shootout.
Pulaski County (1-0) vs. Scott County (1-0) - All-time state reception leader Jake Johnson leads Pulaski County against powerhouse Scott County. Coach Jim Mckee and the Cardinals have had success in recent years against Pulaski defeating them last year 53-31 at home. The Cardinals will be on the road this week hoping to continue their impressive start to the season.
