Scott County provides an excellent atmosphere for high school football and last night was no different. Throughout the double header the stands were filled and all four schools showed impressive student sections. Scott Co.(1-0) vs Tates Creek (0-1) Coach Jim Mckee and co stuck to the script that has been running like a well oiled machine as of late. The Cardinals opened the game pounding the ball as 4 different ball carriers had at least 60 yards just in the first half. Scott County checked into the scoring column early and often scoring three touchdowns in the games first 10 minutes. The Cardinals offensive line came out and played with relentless effort, staying on their blocks and creating big holes for their running backs to run through. #50 Colby Mckee was impressive at the Center position, showing his effort by running his feet and driving his opponent 10 yards down the field on several occasions.#45 Jacob Burton pounded the ball down the Tates Creek defense on his way to 100 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. https://twitter.com/EMitchKSR/status/766764019227193344 Tates Creek looked to start their 2016 season off with an upset but their offense looked disoriented in the first half, only finding the end zone once on a 25 yard touchdown pass from #10 Cam Workman to Jaden Baird. Tates Creek held off the running clock with the help of Laron Warner's 155 return yards. Warner is an explosive, shifty runner in space and has the breakaway speed to finish runs. Tates Creek simply couldn't control the line of scrimmage and was dominated because of it. They were held to 230 yards of offense while Scott County had 631 yards of total offense. Tates Creek's Cam Workman finished the game 9 of 21 for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns, with most of that coming on an 89 yard slant pass to #17 Jackson Beerman. Scott County's Josh Davis had an efficient game under center going 7 for 12 for 146 yards and a TD. Scott County will be on the road next Friday @ Pulaski County for a week two match up. Nothing gets easier for Tates Creek as they will face off against defending 3A State Champions Belfry. Lafayette (1-0) vs. Dunbar (0-1)  The nightcap of this doubleheader provided some fireworks early. On the first play from scrimmage UK Commit and Lafayette QB Walker Wood dropped back to pass and tried to find his outside receiver who was then going to pitch it to 6'5 300 offensive tackle Jedrick Wills but Paul Laurence Dunbar's Dontell Brown used his 6'5 frame to intercept the pass and return it for a touchdown. https://twitter.com/EMitchKSR/status/766809608807743488 Lafayette used a mixture of short throws and outside runs to even the score at 7 a piece. Two plays later a fight erupted on Dunbar's sideline after a late hit by Lafayette. The referees and both coaching staff's did a good job of diffusing the situation and trying to get their teams to play smart football. Unfortunately the flags continued to fly all night especially on this drive as there was 5 straight plays with at least one flag. Dunbar's defense did a good job limiting big plays from Wood and the rest of the Lafayette offense early. #17 Matthew Guilfoil made key catches on 4th down to extend drives throughout the game. Wood found #6 De'Kwan Edwards in the back of the end zone on 4th&5 to go ahead 14-7. After a few stops by each team #15 Gavin Bugg connected with #1 Tre Homer on a tipped pass to get down to the 1 yard line and eventually even the score at 14-14. Before half Lafayette extended their lead to 29-14. Lafayette's Offensive Coordinator does not sugarcoat anything for his three star QB pushing him to make better decisions and become a better player because of it. Lafayette came out of the half firing on all cylinders scoring on a 19 yard run by #23 Ean Shaw.Shaw had a big game on both sides of the ball playing hard nose defense at middle linebacker and scoring two rushing touchdowns. After the score Lafayette recovered their onside kick and Zak Sherman gets them in the red zone then catches a 19 yard pass from Wood for a TD making the score 43-14. Dunbar struggled to get anything going once their offense got on the field as Lafayette's defense stepped up in the 2nd half. Lafayette continues their 2016 season next Friday on the road against 3A foe Boyle County. Paul Laurence Dunbar will look to bounce back from this game against Madison Central next week. Other Notable Scores Around the State Desales vs Fairdale - Nick Roush was there to witness Desales first home game and had to be pleased with the 30-0 win. Pulaski County vs Harlan County- Jake Johnson leads the way as Pulaski wins 26-14. Central vs Manual - The battle between Louisville schools came down to the end and was won by Manual 21-20. Butler vs Meade County - Butler pulls out the close one 20-13. Highlands vs Cooper - The bluebirds are able to get their revenge after last seasons loss by beating Cooper 52-42.
