KSR Sources: Kentucky may schedule non-conference game this week

by:Jack Pilgrim02/20/21
Kentucky is looking into the possibility of adding a non-conference game to the schedule this week, KSR has learned. According to KSR's Matt Jones, UK is exploring the possibility of replacing TAMU with a new opponent after the SEC officially decided to postpone the Wildcats' game against the Aggies due to a combination of positive tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals within the Texas A&M program. One possibility? Brad Calipari and the Detroit Mercy Titans. "Hearing UK is looking at scheduling a game this week," Jones reported. "I suspect it will be Detroit Mercy if possible." https://twitter.com/KySportsRadio/status/1363313871675678720?s=20 Earlier today, UK head coach John Calipari said his goal was to give his team "a couple days (off to) catch our breath" following the postponement of Kentucky's game against Texas A&M, adding that the Wildcats would likely play three SEC games the final week of the season. “Yeah (we could add new games), but the gauntlet that these kids have just been through, I’m not sure we don’t take a couple days and catch our breath,” Calipari said. “Then try to play both A&M and South Carolina both that last week where we get three games. Play at Mississippi, then two home games before our conference tournament. That’s what I’d like to do. These kids need a breath, come on. They’ve been through a gauntlet.” Should UK add another non-conference opponent this week, along with the four-game, eight-day SEC slate Calipari is hoping for next week, Kentucky could end the season with five total opponents leading up to the SEC Tournament.
