KSR Today: 3SSB Championships, 'Cats in Summer League, and charity basketball

Zack Geogheganby: Zack Geoghegan07/12/25ZGeogheganKSR

Good morning, folks! You’ve made it to Saturday. Give yourself a nice pat on the back. I’m pretty sure I hear the pool calling your name. But my ears are only hearing the beautiful sound of bouncing basketballs.

I’m back at the adidas 3SSB Championships in Rock Hill, SC, for day three of nothing but non-stop hoops. College coaches have been roaming the gym from morning until night since the live period opened on Thursday, and today will be no different. Kentucky men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope has been splitting his time in Rock Hill and North Augusta, GA, for Peach Jam, while assistant coach Cody Fueger stuck around in the Palmetto State. They’ll be back inside the various gyms again all day Saturday to get first-hand looks at their favorite high school prospects.

Before you dive into the rest of this morning’s news and notes, check out what’s been happening in the Kentucky recruiting world over the last couple of days. I’ll have even more player interviews on the way over the coming days.

Now let’s have a great weekend, shall we?

Former ‘Cats lighting it up in NBA Summer League

Friday was a big one for former Kentucky players in the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League. Koby Brea was en fuego during his debut for the Phoenix Suns, dropping 19 points on 7-10 shooting (4-5 from deep) in under 24 minutes. He hit his first three shots from long range. Meanwhile, Amari Williams was exciting the NBA world with his beautiful cross-court pass for a made triple. He finished with nine points, three rebounds, two blocks, and the one dime for the Boston Celtics. Jacob Toppin even notched a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Atlanta Hawks.

But no one was more impressive than Reed Sheppard, who might not be playing in many more of these Summer League games for the Houston Rockets. The second-year guard looked far too good for this level of competition. He wasn’t at his most efficient (10-25 FG), but still posted 28 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three blocks in 33 minutes. He nailed three straight shots from deep at one point, much to the pleasure of the Las Vegas crowd.

Below is today’s Summer League schedule for the former ‘Cats.

Ryan Lemond failed the donut challenge

In KSR’s donut challenge with $5K on the line and another $5K potentially going to charity, Ryan came close, but 8.5 donuts wasn’t going to cut it. He needed to eat 10 full-sized donuts from Jeff’s Donuts to win the money.

“I feel like I let my team down,” he told Matt Jones on the air after throwing in the towel. “I tried taking it one donut at a time. There is no ‘I’ in KSR, but I feel like I failed my team and everybody who donated. I’m very sorry.”

Ryan gave it his all, but the donuts won this round.

Isaiah Jackson re-signs with Indy

Isaiah Jackson has agreed to a contract that will keep him with the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2021, the Indiana Pacers. ESPN’s Shams Charania reports it as a three-year deal worth $21 million, locking him in with the franchise through the 2028-29 season. Jackson, still only 23, played just five games last season before suffering a torn Achilles, but expects to be healthy in 2025-26 and will be a key piece of the Pacers’ frontcourt.

In his last healthy season (2023-24), Jackson posted per-game averages of 6.5 points, four rebounds, and one block in 13.1 minutes while shooting a career-best 66.5 percent from the field.

A Reece Potter film room breakdown

KSR’s Brandon Ramsey and Steven Peake hopped into the film room to break down what exactly Miami (OH) transfer Reece Potter can bring to the Wildcats in Pope‘s second season as head coach. Expectations aren’t particularly high for the 7-foot-1 native of Lexington, but that might not be a bad thing for the rising junior. Allow Brandon and Steven to explain.
