It’s football time in the Bluegrass — high school football time.
After a long spring and summer away from game action, football is back in Kentucky, starting with two matchups to open the high school season Thursday evening. First, a 34-13 win for Butler County over Russellville. Then, a 48-6 blowout win for Mason County over Newport.
Tonight, though, is where the real fun begins. 100 football games are set to kick off across the state, including a series of rivalry and bowl matchups to open the season.
Where will you want to spend your Friday evening? You can find the long list of opening-night games below:
Where will KSR be? The Kroger KSR Game of the Week is traveling to Jackson, KY to cover the matchup between Magoffin County and Breathitt County — a game that is bigger than football. Breathitt County was devastated by the recent flooding in Eastern Kentucky, where several lives were heartbreakingly lost and homes were destroyed.
KSR’s season-long series needed to start in Eastern Kentucky, where fans will come together for an emotional evening of football under the Friday night lights.
KHSAA shuts down Midwest Charity Classic
As high school football season begins in Kentucky, the KHSAA is spending its time shutting down a charity all-star basketball event set to raise money for flood victims in Eastern Kentucky.
Bylaw 9 forbids in-state student-athletes from participating in “any manner on any nonschool sponsored team in basketball,” “any all-star game in basketball” or “any type of organized competition in basketball.” These restrictions are from the first day of school through the day before the first legal day of practice.
Despite a clear caveat regarding Sheppard and Perry’s game participation — the initial release indicated a waiver approval was necessary — the KHSAA announced Bylaw 9 would be enforced and “no waivers will be given.”
So rather than making an exemption by declining to punish Sheppard and Perry for raising money for flood relief, KHSAA focused on the 2021 vote — well before the state’s recent natural disasters, obviously — and said the rule would be enforced. Too bad, so sad. Sorry about your luck, flood victims.
Embarrassing and shameful.
Ugonna Kingsley Onyenso arrives on campus
You know what isn’t embarrassing and shameful? Kentucky basketball adding a five-star center to the roster in August.
6-foot-11 shot-blocking standout Ugonna Kingsley Onyenso has arrived on campus and has begun the move-in process, with his locker already set up showing off his new number, 33.
Onyenso is the fourth first-year player to sign with the Wildcats for the upcoming season, joining Chris Livingston, Adou Thiero and Cason Wallace.
The five-star center finished ranked No. 18 overall and No. 3 among centers in the final 2022 On3 Player Rankings.
Happy Friday, everyone. Go Cats and go football.
