Over the last 20 innings, the Cincinnati Reds have allowed just one run. However, despite the dominant pitching performance, the Reds have just one win to show for it.

Saturday night’s 1-0 loss proved to be the tipping point of the series as the St. Louis Cardinals took three of five games against Cincinnati. In the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Reds only managed three hits in 11 innings. They then turned around and two-hit the Cardinals less than 24 hours later to win Sunday’s matchup. It was the Reds’ final matchup against their National League Central rival of the 2022 season.

Cincinnati will take Monday off as they await the Boston Red Sox who will visit Great American Ball Park on Tuesday and Wednesday. Nick Lodolo will look to stay hot on the mound as he takes the ball on Tuesday night for a 6:40 p.m. EST first pitch. Chase Anderson is then set to pitch on Wednesday evening. The Reds will stay home for the weekend as well as the Milwaukee Brewers come to town on Thursday for a four-game series.

Reds Snap Losing Streak With Series-Opening Win

It was a strong collective performance on the mound for the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday evening. Chase Anderson got the start and turned in five innings of work on just one run and one hit. Then, Ian Gibaut and Buck Farmer pitched three innings of perfect middle relief to maintain Cincinnati’s advantage. In the bottom of the ninth, Alexis Diaz allowed a walk and a pair of hits that eventually led to an Albert Pujols sacrifice fly that made it a 3-2 game. However, that is as close as the Cardinals would get and the Reds came away with the series-opening victory.

At the plate, Nick Senzel and Aristides Aquino hit home runs for the Reds in the second and sixth innings respectively which helped to provide just enough offense to take down the Cardinals.

Pujols 698th Home Run Helps Cardinals Even the Series

The Cincinnati Reds spent the majority of Friday night with the lead. However, the St. Louis Cardinals came out on top thanks to back-to-back, run-scoring doubles by Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado in the bottom of the seventh inning. Those go-ahead runs came after Albert Pujols tied the game at four runs a piece in the sixth with his 698th career home run. That Arenado go-ahead double in the seventh proved to be the game-winner as the Cardinals held that 6-5 score to even up the long series.

St. Louis Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

It was a long day at the plate for the Cincinnati Reds. In 20 innings of baseball, they managed just one run as they would lose game one 5-1 and game two 1-0 in 11 innings. T.J. Friedl provided all of the scoring of the day with his RBI double in the top of the seventh which turned a 5-0 Cardinals lead into the eventual final score of 5-1. On the mound, Mike Minor was beat up for five runs on five hits while also walking five batters in just three innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Reds and Cardinals combined for just eight total hits in what was a scoreless game until the bottom of the 11th inning. Paul Goldschmidt hit one down the third base line that was gloved by Nick Senzel who had moved into the infield to try and cut down the potential winning run. However, his throw pulled the Reds catcher up the first baseline allowing the walk-off 1-0 victory.

A bright spot for Reds fans on the long day Saturday was Hunter Greene’s pitching performance in the nightcap. The flame-throwing rookie struck out 11 batters while tossing six shutout innings. Greene’s earned run average is now below five on the season at 4.97.

Reds Toss Two-Hitter to Take Series Finale

After a long day at the plate on Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds flipped the script on the Cardinals in the five-game series finale on Sunday. Luis Cessa continues to be excellent in his starting role as he threw five shutout innings allowing just one run. Derek Law, Joel Kuhnel, and Buck Farmer combined to work the final four innings allowing just one more hit and no runs. The victory was Cessa’s fourth of the season and the save was Farmer’s second.

Cincinnati is now 58-89 on the season while St. Louis fell to 87-61.

At the plate, Spencer Steer put the Reds on top in the third inning with a RBI single to center field. Then, Stuart Fairchild delivered a two-run home run in the sixth to make it a 3-0 game. It was a good day for the young Reds rookies who combined for three hits and all three runs driven in.
