KSR's Fringe Sports Friday!

by:Will Lentz01/21/11

In an effort to make KSR more inclusive to all Kentucky Sports we will be dedicating a little time each friday to the ‘fringe’ UK sports.  If you are a member of a club or sports team and would like to see some KSR representation, feel free to send info or pictures of the dance team to [email protected]

-Last weekend we saw Kentucky’s hockey team take on the Dirty Birds and absolutely ‘beat the puck’ out of them by a score of 18-2. In hockey.  The one that’s like soccer, but on ice.  So congrats to the Hockey Cats and good luck as they take on Wright State this weekend.

-Not to be outdone though, the UK Swimming and Diving team will host Louisville Saturday starting at 2.  A swim meet doesn’t have quite the same spectator sport feel to it as any type of game, but the facilities at UK are nice and the times are fast.  Kentucky is bringing in the SEC Diver of the week in Greg Ferrucci and Louisville brings in the Big East Swimmer of the week in Raine Thompson (who I used to swim with back in the day.)

-Meanwhile, in other country club sports, Kentucky’s Eric Quigley lost a tough one to Georgia’s Wil Spencer over the weekend.  Quigley had moved up to the number two Tennis player in the nation before beating the number one from Tennessee to get to the finals, only to lose to that Georgia kid with the wrong number of L’s in his name.

-Kentucky’s rifle team only has one loss on the season so far – and that came against Texas Christian University.  And if you’re going to lose to a school in a gun shooting competition, it might as well be to the Christians from Texas.  However, they are just coming off a win against supposed ‘powerhouse’ Alaska-Fairbanks, which I guess makes sense with all the wolf hunting from helicopters they do up there.  Good luck to them as they take their guns to Oxford this weekend to shoot against Memphis and the Admiral Ackbars of Ole Miss.
