[caption id="attachment_184678" align="alignnone" width="600"] The South Carolina State Capitol.[/caption] The Cats have a big game on Saturday in South Carolina and NEED your support.  The 7-hour drive shouldn't be too bad, even if you are bringing along two interns like myself.  I've never been to Columbia but "I know a guy," and this guy knows a lot about Columbia because he's lived there his whole life.  Don't worry, he hates the Cocks as much we do.

The Best BBQ

[caption id="attachment_184680" align="alignnone" width="500"] barbecuebros.com[/caption] We brag a lot in Kentucky about our mutton on the Western side of the state, but the overwhelming argument is usually between Kansas City BBQ, and Carolina-style.  Carolina-style is different than what you're probably used to, using a mustard base instead of brown sugar.  It's tangy deliciousness is the best at either Maurice's BBQ or Little Pigs.'

Tailgate with the UK Alumni Association

Head over to Seawell's at 4:30 for a meal with fellow blue bloods, the UK band and cheerleaders.  There will be barbecue and a cash bar; $15 for members, $20 for nonmembers and $10 for students.

Satisfy your Drunchies

When the game is over and your exhausted from a long day of boozing and (hopefully) winning, you're going to need to get your grub on.  Pawley's Front Porch has burgers that are incomparable.  You can also try Hickory Tavern, Flying Saucer,  Thirsty Fellow, Rockaways or your good ol' Waffle House.

Fine, Fancy Dining

When you aren't looking to rub elbows with a bunch of obnoxious Cocks, Columbia has some downtown options that will appeal to the Big Blue.  Your best bet is at Bourbon, with a fully stocked bourbon bar, and exceptional Southern food (I hear the quail and pork chops are spot on).  Cola’s, Motor Supply, Blue Marlin, and the Oak Table are other restaurant options that should not disappoint.

College Bar Craziness

(Free-Times)[/caption] Tin Roof is never a bad choice, but you should also check out Jake's in 5 Points.  5 Points is the place to be in Columbia, located close to Carolina's campus.  It has food and shopping during the day, transforming into a mad house at night.

Cool Bars for the Non-Collegians

[caption id="attachment_184679" align="alignnone" width="540"] The Whig[/caption] We can't all be Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman.  For those who like a calmer, more diverse crowd, The Whig is the hip place to be.  The underground bar across the street from the State House has a unique atmosphere, complemented by craft brews and delicious burgers. World of Beer, Thirsty Fellows and the Flying Saucer are a few other good options that should be worth your while.

It's More than Drinking and Eating

It's big fancy houses too.  It's easy to drive around and "ooh and ahhh" at the Southern architecture, but you can take it to the next level by visiting Woodrow Wilson's Family home or the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens.  It's the kind of place that makes you say "HOLY SHNIKIES!" even though informal language is (probably) unacceptable. Most importantly, bring your poncho and bring some passion.  It's going to be a rowdy Sandstorm crowd in the rain, and the Cats need all you can give.
