Lane Kiffin is expected to be the next head coach at LSU
It’s all over but the shouting when it comes to Lane Kiffin‘s landscape-altering decision, one that had ESPN’s Marty Smith aging in dog years while being held hostage at the Ole Miss facilities into the late hours of Saturday evening.
At long last, clarity. No, we don’t have an official announcement from Kiffin, Ole Miss or LSU, but the where has been somewhat confirmed while the when and how are the only things left in the air.
Here’s what we know, according to On3’s own Chris Low: Lane Kiffin intends to be the next head coach of the LSU Tigers. That’s the big news, and really, all that matters at the end of the day. The Rebels will have to find a replacement in 2026.
That includes a scheduled press conference for Monday in Baton Rouge, introducing the 50-year-old as the program’s next leader, replacing the recently-fired Brian Kelly. Kiffin’s deal with LSU is expected to approach the $14 million mark annually, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football, but nothing has been signed as of now.

The tiny-print details of all of this, however, are fascinating. Kiffin has wanted to continue coaching Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff, even after taking the LSU job. The Rebels have essentially told him to pound sand. Meanwhile, Kiffin has scheduled a team meeting with his now-former players for this afternoon while already “(lining) up most of his Ole Miss offensive staff to go with him to LSU” while also telling them “if they’re not on the plane with him to Baton Rouge on Sunday … they won’t have a spot on LSU’s staff,” per On3’s Chris Low.
That’s the good stuff.
He was thought to be the first major domino to fall with a decision expected on Saturday. Now, here we wait into the early afternoon on Sunday with no announcement from the man himself. Meanwhile, Jon Sumrall — previously thought to be the likely future face of Kentucky football as an alum and former Wildcat linebacker — is going to be coaching against his alma mater every year at Florida, accepting that job this morning. We also got news of Auburn hiring USF coach Alex Golesh to lead the Tigers on the Plains with Arkansas also making a move for Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield.
Will Kentucky be one of the next dominoes to fall? Waiting on you, Mitch Barnhart.
