Lexington Native Fencer Upset in Round of 16

Lee Kiefer, a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar, quest for an Olympics medal ended a lot sooner than many expected. Kiefer, the world's third-ranked foil fencer was upset in the round of 16 of the individual foil competition. Kiefer cruised through her first match earlier this morning, defeating Mona Shaito of Lebanon 15-13. An just an hour later, Kiefer fell 12-7 and was unable to fight her way back. Yongshi of China, the world's 30th ranked foil fencer, completed the 15-9 upset. The entire individual foil competition will be completed today, with the gold medal match tonight.
