Governor Andy Beshear joined Matt Jones Thursday morning on Kentucky Sports Radio to discuss the state of the Commonwealth as Kentucky prepares to reopen from coronavirus closures.

Beshear’s visit to KSR is almost two months after he first appeared on the show in the wake of the cancellation of the SEC Tournament. At that time, early models and projections were morbid. The Governor commended Kentuckians for reacting quickly to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“They ought to be proud of what we’ve done as a state,” he said.

In the 20-minute conversation Governor Beshear touched on a variety of topics related to reopening the state, including restaurants, mask-wearing, daycare facilities and youth sports. Without any setbacks, he believes baseball and swimming could be available for kids this summer. There’s still plenty of uncertainty surrounding high school sports, but his goal is to get kids back in schools this fall.

“I believe if we do this right and we prove that we can be healthy at work, if we keep our numbers down, then yes, we’ll be able to go back to school in the fall. If we continue our current trajectory, if our tracing and our testing come through, because we’ve got a lot of positive things going on with the way we are addressing the situation,” he said.

“That’s my goal. I know kids really need to get back to school and that’s my priority. It’s one of the reasons we may not be able to do some other things this summer. It’s because we want to be in the very best position we can to get our kids back to school.”
