Leave it to Matthew Mitchell to pull off a KSR first. Today, the UK Hoops coach called in a favor during his guest hosting stint and had former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier call in. Mitchell and Spurrier go back to Mitchell’s days as an assistant coach at Florida in the early 2000’s, and today, the Head Ball Coach told stories about his career both as a coach and a player, including his visit to Kentucky as a basketball recruit back in the 1960’s.

For years, Spurrier was a hated figure in the Bluegrass for the way his Florida teams mercilessly poured it on the Cats season after season, but once Kentucky finally got the best of him — albeit at South Carolina — it seems the Big Blue Nation’s feelings towards him softened. Spurrier’s one of the most entertaining figures in the sport, and he even tossed in a few nice words for the Cats during his interview.

“I pull for the Kentucky Wildcats most of the time unless they’re playing South Carolina or Florida,” Spurrier said. “Coach Mark Stoops, I think he’s going to continue doing well there.”

You can hear his call around the 22-minute mark of Hour 1:

While you’re at it, listen to Hour 2, which includes more fun with Coach Mitchell, Ryan Lemond, and Shannon the Dude:

Tomorrow, Vince Marrow and Lamar Thomas take over the show to talk all things gridiron, and on Monday, we begin our final week of the #MattIsGoneTour:
