Love For The Ladies

mitchell With the men taking all the media hype, Matthew Mitchell and his Fightin' Lady Cats have quietly put together a stellar season.  After defeating Mississippi State today on the road, UK Hoops pushed their record to 18-3 (with the 3 losses by a combined total of 15 points) and will undoubtedly be ranked in the AP Poll when it comes out tomorrow.  Few people saw this team as a contender in the SEC, but they currently sit second (2nd!) in the standings, trailing only Tennessee.  It's been tough seeing UK Hoops struggle with ups and down in recent years.  At times, you thought they had turned a corner, only to have a major setback (injuries, coaches up and leaving).  But there is reason to believe that we are seeing the beginnings of a program that can make noise nationally every year.  Traditionally, schools with outstanding men's programs have equally solid women's counterparts (UConn, Duke, UNC) and it feels good to know that both Kentucky basketball programs are headed in VERY positive directions.  Mitchell has also secured one of the best recruiting classes in 2010, with 3 commits in the top 70 overall players, according to the unfortunately-named HoopGurlz recruiting service.  And as a point of conversation, you would have to think that Calipari has only helped UK Hoops with recruiting, right? So if you're one of those folks who think the sky is falling over at Rupp, maybe it's time you check out the ladies over in  Memorial.  But even if you aren't, they're putting a great product on the floor and its well-worth checking out.  Next game is Thursday night against Ole Miss.  There- that's the most I will probably ever write about women's basketball, ever.  Go Lady Cats!
