The undisputed KSR Guest Host of the Year was back in his favorite chair today as Wednesday’s fill-in for the vacationing Matt Jones. Joined by his once-a-year radio sidekick Ryan Lemond, former UK Women’s Basketball head coach Matthew Mitchell carried the show for the full two hours with updates on his life since retirement and more.

First, the latest on Coach Mitchell’s health since surgery to remove blood from his brain around this time last year. “My health is fantastic. I’m in great health, feeling good,” Mitchell told Ryan Lemond. “Really and truly, that whole deal went real well, feeling good and feeling no ill effects of it whatsover.”

He also opened up about family matters and what has been keeping him busy since his retirement last summer, in addition to his thoughts on the basketball program he handed off to his former assistant, Kyra Elzy.

Asked by a caller for his take on the state of the program and if he believes the Final Four is the next step, Mitchell replied, “I think where the team is right now is extremely exciting with the personnel that’s coming back. I think Coach Elzy is the absolute right person, and I think all of us who are supporting the program and are for the program, whether you’re working inside the program or you’re cheering them from outside, everybody wants to go to the Final Four, everybody wants to win a national championship, and you just have to work at it.

“We got close while I was there and I was real proud of what all we accomplished, would’ve loved to have gone to a Final Four, but I definitely think that we have that type of program. I think we’ve proven that, and I think (the Final Four) is something that’s very difficult to achieve, but I certainly have confidence that Coach Elzy and her staff and the players we have, have that caliber of a program and that’s certainly a possibility. We’ll be rooting for hard for them.”

Hear everything Coach Mitchell had to say today on KSR. He was great, as always.
