Maxwell Smith Recruited Kentucky

Photo from UK Athletics There's a cool post on the SEC blog portion of the ESPN website about the unconventional way in which Maxwell Smith arrived on the University of Kentucky's campus. Smith sat out his junior season with injuries and then wound up transferring from the run heavy offense he played in at Bishop Alemany for the more pass happy attack of Birmingham High School, both in California. He put up big numbers and started to get attention, but was believed to be a junior by most of the schools looking at him. That's why he took the initiative to send out game tape to school all over the country, one of those schools was Kentucky. The team liked what they saw, but didn't have space for Smith so after a grayshirt semester and a freshman campaign in which he was seemingly dumped into the fire, Smith is holding down the starting role going into the season. I don't know if there's anything more Kentucky than your starting quarterback not being recruited by anyone on staff, but I can live with it if Smith can come in and produce next season. Smith played well last year considering that he probably shouldn't have been anywhere close to the field of play. He seems to possess the confidence and skill necessary to succeed. If he can carry us to any sort of semblance of a respectable season then he'll certainly win the title of recruiter of the year.
