Putin

If you’ve been paying close attention to the internet (c’mon, you read KSR, so you definitely are on the internet way too much), then you’ve likely seen how Russian ‘president’ Vladimir Putin became a meme of sorts. Whether it be pictures of Putin being a badass or commentary on the 140% voter turnout in Russia, the guy has made me laugh a few times. And now he’s done it again.

In 2005, a New England Patriots’ super bowl ring was suddenly resting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s finger. When questions arose, Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft merely stated that the ring was a “gift” to Putin – “President Putin, a great and knowledgable sports fan, was clearly taken with its uniqueness. I decided to give him the ring as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and [his] leadership.”

However, he’s changed his tune. Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin stole his Super Bowl ring.

I am finding this all highly entertaining. Check out these great details, seemingly lifted straight from a movie:

Kraft explained the incident happened while Sandy Weill and other business execs were in St. Petersburg. “I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone with this ring,’ ” Kraft told the crowd at Carnegie Hall’s Medal of Excellence gala at the Waldorf-Astoria.“I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.”

But Kraft really wanted the 4.94-carat bauble back, he said Thursday, admitting he’d gotten a call from the George W. Bush-run White House, saying, “‘It would really be in the best interest of US-Soviet relations if you meant to give the ring as a present.” (In fact the Soviet Union had collapsed 14 years earlier.)

And now the ring sits in the Kremlin library.
