Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores is "excited" about adding Lynn Bowden Jr.

One team’s stupidity is another team’s brilliance, at least that’s how we’re going analyze this.

The Las Vegas Raiders made the confusing decision to trade away their third-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, former Kentucky quarterback/wide receiver/magician Lynn Bowden Jr. to the Miami Dolphins. The Raiders’ front office had to attach a future sixth-round pick to Bowden just to bring back a fourth-round pick. What made the situation even more head-scratching was the fact that the regular season is only one week away and Bowden had yet to play so much as a preseason snap.

The explanation as to why the Raiders seemingly dumped a versatile offensive weapon without even watching him play never added up, with fingers quickly being pointed to Bowden’s apparent lack of skills in the pass blocking area. Beyond that, his character was also being questioned, despite him never being in any actual trouble in the eyes of the public.

But when one team makes a rash decision, there’s always going to be one that will come in to reap the benefits. In this instance, that team is hopefully the Miami Dolphins. Just days after the trade, Miami head coach Brian Flores had some encouragement for the first-year wide do-it-all man, saying he was “excited” to bring Bowden onboard.

“I’m excited about both Lynn and Malcolm [Perry] from a talent standpoint,” Flores said, according to the Miami Herald. “Tough, competitive guys. We did a lot of work on Lynn pre-draft and when the trade was an option, we did a lot more work.

While we don’t know how much playing time Bowden might see in the season opener, if any, considering he’ll have to learn an entire offseason’s worth of Dolphins content in roughly one week, we do know that he’ll be someone the team looks to utilize down the road.

“We’re excited about having him join our team. There’s a lot he’s going to have to learn. He’s not going to jump out and start playing. He has to learn how we do things. He’s got a lot to learn and [that takes] a little bit of time. We’re excited to have him.”

I’m going to compare this situation in terms of the NBA and its Radiers equivalent, the New York Knicks. Have you ever wondered why it is that so many basketball players have short-tenured runs in the Big Apple and then have a falling out with the organization before going on to become much more reliable and successful players immediately somewhere else? In just the last few years, we can point to guys such as Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr., J.R. Smith, just to name a few. When I think about the Raiders’ past mistakes, picking JaMarcus Russell over Calvin Johnson in the 2007 NFL Draft is the first thing that comes to mind. You can never trust an organization like that, especially one that has had the same ownership family since 1972 and only one playoff appearance since 2003. Take it from someone who’s been cheering on the Cleveland Cavaliers for over 15 years.

The Dolphins are excited about Bowden, and that’s more than the Raiders have been able to say about him over the last month.
