Kids all across the Great Lakes State grow up with dreams of playing college football for the Big Blue, not at the Big House, but at Kroger Field. What a time to be alive.

This week Kentucky’s lead recruiter in the state of Michigan, Steve Clinkscale, extended a scholarship offer to Maxwell Hairston, a three-star cornerback from West Bloomfield, a township just outside of Detroit. Shortly after Hairston received the news, he was ecstatic, telling 247 Sports:

Kentucky has been a dream school of mine since I was young, this is huge,” he said. “[Kentucky] easily goes in my top schools. I’ll be posting a new and updated top five schools.”

Hairston is also considering Washington State, Baylor, Florida State, Kansas, Cincinnati, Oregon and Oregon State. He hopes to make a decision by his birthday on Aug. 6.

For many UK football fans, it’s easy to recall miserable losses from two-win seasons. For people that are Hairston’s age, a member of the class of 2021, he was in middle school when Boom Williams and Benny Snell each racked up 1,000 yards in 2016, a season that ended with a victory over Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson.

“What these guys know, they grew up in high school where we played in four straight bowl games,” Mark Stoops said on signing day. “That’s what they understand and know about Kentucky, that we win games and we’re playing in bowl games and we want to continue to build this program and take it to another level.”

A Michigan kid dreaming of playing football for the Kentucky Wildcats — it may sound crazy to some, but that’s just another side effect of Mark Stoops’ success in Lexington.
