Monday A.M. Headlines: Happy Labor Day! (and other things to know)

Good morning and Happy Labor Day!

On the first Monday of each September, we (or most of you) take the day off to honor the American labor movement and what all of the hard labor from American laborers means for this country. We (well, some of you) will honor labor by boating, others will grill, some may golf, and there will be those who do absolutely nothing and love it.

Then there will be some of our hardest workers who will continue to work as not all industries and walks of life can clock out on a Monday. We salute those good folks–grocers, restaurant employees, UK website bloggers, retail workers, boat dock gas pumpers, nurses, (I want to stop listing jobs now but I don’t want to insult anyone so everyone working today!)–as they keep the engine churning.

Happy Labor Day to everyone. Here’s what to know from us before you get back out on the lake or whatever it is you’re doing on this federal holiday:

 

Lynn Bowden is a Miami Dolphin.

We’ll begin with surprising news out of the NFL, the Oakland Raiders decision to get rid of Lynn Bowden one week before the season opener. A coveted third-round pick in this year’s NFL draft, Bowden never played a snap for the Raiders before general manager Mike Mayock ditched the rookie playmaker for a draft pick. Even odder, the Raiders traded Bowden and a 2021 sixth-round pick to Miami in exchange for a fourth-round pick, the same fourth-round pick Vegas traded to Miami for a linebacker just last week.

Then came the speculation surrounding the deal, things like “the rookie was more concerned with picking up new cars than the playbook,” in a story from The Athletic. The Raiders’ Mayock stepped forward and said the decision was strictly football, telling a radio show, “Lynn has come in and done everything we’ve asked. We just have to continue to give him the time to learn to convert to a running back primarily. And he’s never been that before.”

Bowden took to Twitter to silence his critics on any off-the-field problems that could’ve played into the decision to send him to Miami:

Bad Adebayo, Tyler Herro need at least another game to close out first-place Bucks.

Now for news from the NBA, where BBN’s Miami Heat fell shy of the upset sweep of Eric Bledsoe’s Bucks on Sunday. Adebayo had 26 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in the losing effort, while Herro tried to be the hero with multiple clutch buckets in a tight game:

It just wasn’t enough in this one. They’ll try again to advance Tuesday night at 6:30 on TNT. A win and they’re in the Eastern Conference Finals as a No. 5 seed.

 

The Lakers evened the series with the Rockets. 

Anthony Davis and his Scottie Pippen, LeBron James, combined for 62 points to avenge the Game 1 loss to Houston. Rajon Rondo chipped in 10 points, nine assists and five steals in only 29 minutes. The Lakers outscored the Rockets by 28 points when he was on the floor.

 

Jamal Murray in action against the Clippers tonight.

Murray and his Denver Nuggets will meet the Clippers in Game 3 tonight around 9 p.m. over on TNT to break a 1-1 tie in the WCF semifinals.

 

The PGA Tour will determine its Tour Champion today.

Round 4 of the Tour Championship is today and Dustin Johnson holds a five-stroke lead with 18 holes to play in the sport’s season finale. Xander Schauffele and Kentucky’s own Justin Thomas are in a tie for second, trailing Johnson’s -19 at -14 each. Jon Rahm (-13) and Collin Morikawa (-12) are the only other players in contention, if you can even say that for their hopes of catching Johnson, who will claim the tournament’s $15 million cash prize if he can hang on.

Coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. on NBC.

It feels like it’s been 84 years.
