With football back in full-swing, we want to give our readers a chance to discuss everything pigskin-related over the past week. Thus, we present to you KSR's first Monday Morning Quarterback segment. Every Monday throughout the season, there will be tidbits in this post on our Wildcats, college football, and the NFL. Feel free to join in. Brag about your team's successes, defend your team's failures, or just come discuss fall's best sport.
-Let's begin with Kentucky's 47-14 win over Kent State. The Wildcats needed to destroy a team to feel better about themselves, and that's exactly what they did. Kentucky's offense looked good, the defense gave a much better effort, and things are looking up heading into the Western Kentucky game. The one major problem that looks like it's going to stick with this team all season is run defense. It HAS to get better, and fast, or players like South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore's Heisman Trophy highlights are going to be all from his trip to Commonwealth Stadium.
-Continuing with college football, the conference that has been the biggest disappointment so far is the B1G Ten. Only three out of the five teams that started in AP top 25 are still there. Both (#16) Nebraska and (#13) Wisconsin lost to inferior Pac-12 teams, sending them on a free fall out of the rankings. Collectively, the conference went 6-6 over the weekend, all in out of conference games.
-Switching focus to the NFL, how about RGIII's debut? 19 for 26, 320 yards and 2 TDs -- including an 88-yard bomb to Pierre Garcon. It's not an easy task to go into the Superdome and out-duel Drew Brees, especially in your first NFL start. Griffin looks like he's going to be a special talent, and it's up to head coach Mike Shanahan to keep him going in the right direction.
-In his first game with the Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning proved that he's got a lot left in the tank. Whether it's Manning or Tim Tebow, the Broncos are forming a habit of beating the Steelers in big games. Former Kentucky LB, Wesley Woodyard, also played a big role in the victory. He lead all defenders with 12 tackles, and even notched a sack. With usual starter D.J. Williams out for the first six games, Woodyard is making the best of his opportunity.
-There are two more NFL games on tap for tonight, both divisional opponents. Cincinnati takes on Baltimore, and San Diego will face Oakland. Knowing the huge Bengals' fan base in the Kentucky-area, how is everyone feeling about Cincinnati's chances tonight? Both should be really good games.
Finally, in case you missed it, Randall Cobb had an outstanding game yesterday, highlighted by a 75-yard punt return TD. The Packers used Cobb in every way possible. He played flanker, slot, tailback, punt returner, kick returner... literally everywhere. Check out our guy doing work:
