Shortly after news broke of Nolan Hickman's decision to decommit from the University of Kentucky, the top player from the class of 2022 also decided to opt-out of his future college home--although this one was hardly a surprise. Emoni Bates, rated No. 1 in his entire class by all three of 247 Sports, Rivals, and ESPN, has decommitted from head coach Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans, Bates tells Tipton Edits. Texas has already reached out to bates, per Eric Bossi. The 6-foot-8, 185-pound Bates will reopen his recruitment with the potential that he could join another college or make the leap straight to the pros, most likely the NBA's G League. The expectation all along, even before Bates picked Michigan State, was that he would spurn college and head to the professional ranks. Considering he's been the top player in his class since he was a sophomore in high school, this news isn't all that shocking. Bates is now the second player from Izzo's 2022 recruiting class to decommit, joining fellow five-star Enoch Boakye, who backed out of his Michigan State commitment in February before joining Arizona State earlier this month. Bates originally picked the Spartans in June of 2020.
