Over the last few weeks, Kentucky has been rumored to be leading for the services of several prep stars, including the Harrison twins, James Young, Julius Randle, and mega-talent Andrew Wiggins. However, Cat fans should be warned that this means absolutely nothing. Kids change their minds all the time, and until these youngsters put pen to paper and sign their letters of intent, all the scuttlebutt in the world doesn't mean a damn thing. In fact, top 10 recruits are so notoriously unreliable that Rick Pitino doesn't even bother recruiting them. And at the risk of putting a ton of pressure on John Calipari, it is imperative that he does ink these players. Why? Because Jabari Parker, the top player in the 2013 class, is rumored to be leaning towards Duke. *When The Tingle Becomes A Chill: As mentioned above, Kentucky is reported to be the leader for Andrew Wiggins. Frankly, one must question the wisdom of Calipari wanting to add Wiggins to the UK roster, for one simple reason: Andrew Wiggins is a Canadian. Invariably, the first time he struggles, he is bound to be on the wrong end of some anti-Canadian sentiment from notoriously patriotic Kentucky fans. And is John Calipari completely unfamiliar with the history of Kentucky basketball? The Cats have previously had players from Canada on their roster, and to be blunt, it didn't work. Bernard Cote, anybody? Does the name Sheray Thomas ring a bell? To be sure, these are nice young men, but hardly the caliber of talent with which you win championships. (Yes, Jamaal Magloire is from Canada, but that was a long time ago and he played for a different coach, so his success is hardly relevant to this discussion.) At any rate, unlike Lee Greenwood, Coach Cal is apparently not proud to be an American. *Fist City: Terrence Jones played wonderfully for the Houston Rockets NBA Summer League team, averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds a game, while shooting 50% from the field. This does not bode well for Kentucky. These numbers are all superior to those he put up in his two seasons at UK, thus making it crystal clear to anyone paying attention that he was under-utilized and misused during his time in Lexington. What does it say about John Calipari's approach to developing young talent that one of his players puts up better stats in the NBA than in college? The guess here is that Jones is starting to regret allowing Coach Cal to talk him out of his commitment to Washington. And if that wasn't foreboding enough for Big Blue Nation, Darius Miller was only able to put up a meager 4 points per game, while shooting a measly 33% from the field for the New Orleans Hornets Summer League squad. Amazingly, those figures are far superior to the abysmal 0.4 assists per game Miller averaged. What does it say about John Calipari's approach to developing young talent that one of his players puts up such paltry numbers in the NBA Summer League, especially when he put up far better numbers in college? * On this date: On this date in 1966, Duke didn't have any black players either.
