Exaggerator made it interesting with a late surge from the outside, but once Nyquist took the lead from Gun Runner the race was over. He becomes the eighth undefeated horse to win the Derby. Danzing Candy jumped out to the early lead before Gun Runner took the lead for a small time. Nyquist came around on the final turn and lead all the way down the stretch. Nyquist's odds finished at 2-1 before the race and paid out $6.60 on a two dollar bet. Nyquist's time was actually two seconds faster than American Pharoah. This was the second Kentucky Derby for Doug O'Neill, who also trained I'll Have Another in 2012. Mario Gutierrez road both of his winning horses and J. Paul Reddam owned both as well.
