Oscar Tshiebwe Screams Drowned Out on Sahvir Wheeler Screen

Ball screens are Sahvir Wheeler‘s worst enemy.

One blind-sided the Kentucky point guard at LSU so hard, he suffered a neck injury that sidelined him for more than two games. A little more than two weeks later he ran into another hard ball screen that sent him to the hardwood. It gave Auburn an open three, sparking a 9-0 run that seemingly put the game out of reach.

Unlike the LSU loss, Wheeler was able to return to the game. Like the screen at LSU, Oscar Tshiebwe was guarding the man who set the screen. It’s his job to let Wheeler know the screen is coming, but that’s a challenge in the middle of a loud, rowdy road arena.

“I scream, I scream again,” Tshiebwe said. “I scream at the beginning again for everybody. But again it was too loud. They did not hear it. I don’t know, we got to do something else to figure it out.”

It’s a teammate’s job to look out for his fellow defender. Even though Oscar sagged back to help near the free throw line, in a normal atmosphere Wheeler should be able to hear the warnings from his teammate.

“They tell me to get closer. I was up there,” Oscar said.”I think I just gotta scream loud. Because a game like this is so loud to hear you. I just gotta go out there and scream and tell him the screen is coming.”

He added, “I think we just gotta do a better job when screaming.”

No matter what the solution may be, it is clear that something must be done. Kentucky’s point guard cannot continue to take hit after hit after hit.
