We’ve reached the semifinal round of the high school playoffs. KSR stays in Lexington this Friday as Owensboro visits Frederick Douglass in a 5A rematch from last year’s Final Four. The Red Devils topped Douglass 28-27 a year ago to advance to the title game.

Owensboro Red Devils (12-1)

Owensboro has won twelve consecutive games after falling to St. Xavier in the season opener. Four-star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt departed after the third game of the season to enroll at Rutgers. Head coach Jayson Fallin’s team is undefeated in his absence and leads 5A after scoring 48.5-points per game. Kasey Boone has filled in nicely by completing 77 passes for 1,304 yards and has thrown 22 touchdowns compared to six interceptions. Tramel Barksdale’s 1,177 rushing yards pace the Red Devils. He’s scored 14 touchdowns on the season. Two pass catchers have exceeded 30 receptions. Jeremiah Goodwin and Khalil Rogers have 33 and 32 catches respectively.

Owensboro allows 16 points per game. Zachary Clark is the team’s top tackler after recording 94 stops. Jeremiah Goodwin is the defense’s designated havoc producer by registering 17 tackles for loss and 12 quarterback sacks. Andrew Lanz is one of the most accurate kickers in the state after nailing 83 PATs. Owensboro leads 5A with 20 interceptions which could come in handy against Douglass’ pass-happy offense.

Frederick Douglass Broncos (12-1)

Frederick Douglass enters Friday’s contest with a 12-1 record. Its lone loss came against 4A powerhouse Boyle County. The Broncos’ offense is averaging 42 points per contest and led by receiver commit Dane Key. The Kentucky commit has caught 43 passes for 729 yards and 7 touchdowns. Cameron Dunn has added 42 catches for 571 yards and seven scores. Quarterback Samuel Cornett’s 2,123 passing yards and 22 touchdowns have been key to Douglass’ air game. Running back TJ Horton has contributed 374 yards and 10 scores.

Frederick Douglass is 5A’s top defense after allowing just 8.6 points per game. Notably, Nathan McPeek’s team ranks second in 5A by giving up 74 passing yards per game. Kentucky defensive back commit Ty Bryant paces the defense with 50 tackles. The versatile athlete has also scored ten offensive touchdowns. Caden Johnson has recorded seven tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks.

Should be a good one in Lexington.
