He guided the Bluebirds to a state title with a perfect 15-0 record in 1998, while taking home the state's Mr. Football award that season. Lorenzen finished his Highlands career with 6,822 career passing yards and 89 career touchdown passes, and an absurd all-time record of 41-2. Years later, another Highlands quarterback came along as a young star in the making, and Lorenzen offered to mentor him throughout his career. His name was Patrick Towles, and he too put up huge numbers at Highlands, won the state title, earned the state's Mr. Football award, and went on to start at the University of Kentucky. After Lorenzen's passing, Towles shared a note Lorenzen had given him when he was a sophomore in high school. It read, "You are a hell of a QB! Please call me if you want some help or if you need some advice... You can be great at HHS!" Towles also had this to say about his mentor, "Jared was in incredible player, coach, and man. Having him as my QB coach in high school was such a privilege. He made me such a better player and person. I will miss you so much Coach Lo. Throw some touchdowns in heaven."
