A Southwest airplane bound for Baltimore had to be
evacuated before taking off at the Louisville airport today because of... a smoking cell phone?
Multiple reports say 75 anxious passengers were pulled off the plane when
a passenger's Samsung Galaxy phone began to emit smoke prior to takeoff. It's not the first time a Samsung phone has done this; in fact, there's currently a recall on one of the phone models due to this happening far too often. The phones are literally catching fire.
Southwest issued this statement following the evacuation:
"Before Southwest Airlines Flight 994 departed from Louisville for Baltimore, a customer's electronic device, believed to be a Samsung, began emitting smoke. All customers and crew deplaned safely via the main cabin door. Customers will be accommodated on other Southwest flights to their final destinations. Safety is always our top priority at Southwest and we encourage our customers to comply with the FAA Pack Safe guidelines."
My phone catches fire all the time when I get the aux cord or send a hot tweet, but never on its own or on an airplane.
Figure it out, Samsung.
