Pookie Jones Football Randoms

Pookie Jones Lead The Cats To The '93 Peach Bowl One of my favorite players growing up as a Kentucky football fan was none other than Pookie Jones. In fact, he was liked so much throughout my family that our first dog was named after the Wildcat signal caller. Pookie was a member of the 1993 Peach Bowl runner-up team which was the highlight of the disastrous Bill Curry Era. It was a treat to watch him play as he always found a way to make it look so easy on the field. Jones got into baseball after graduation before quarterbacking the Louisville Fire for a few seasons. One of my favorites, PJ. Woodson Looks To Go Out With A Bang Speaking of great signal callers, there hasn't been a player more responsible for the turn around of Kentucky football the past two seasons more than Andre Woodson. Woodson was a lost cause who frankly, just didn't really give a damn in the early part of his career. Faced with the second string QB job after starting in 2004 for the Cats, Woodson decided to get serious. Once he realized the talent that he had all of the other things were easy to task such as film, being a leader, and representing the University with pride. Over the past two seasons Woodson has thrown for 67 touchdowns to 17 interceptions while picking apart defenses to the tune of almost 7,000 yards. On New Years Eve the Cats will take the field seeking their second consecutive bowl victory as well as back to back eight win seasons. The program has been starving for a player with the talent and attitude that Woodson has displayed in his career, and the positive exposure and success will do nothing but help in recruiting down the road. Grobe Says NO to Hogs Coach Jim Grobe will return next season to Coach Wake Forest. The Grobe-to-Arkansas speculation begin Wednesday, after a university fundraising arm approved a salary supplement for the Wake Forest coach. There was no official word from Arkansas, however, on whether Grobe would replace Nutt, who quit Nov. 26 and was hired almost immediately by Mississippi. Grobe took the Demon Deacons to the first BCS bowl in school history in 2006 in a loss to Louisville. Wake Forest will participate in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on December 29 against Connecticut. Not Typical FSU, But It's Still Bowden and The Seminoles Watching Florida State growing up was quite a treat. Charlie Ward was the Michael Vick Pat White before there were multi-talented quarterbacks galore in college football. Neon Deion, Peter Warrick, Warrick Dunn, and the lists goes on for the outstanding players that have worn the Tomahawk on their helmet. In recent seasons, for whatever reason, Florida State has slowly declined on the national scale that they once claimed. At one time you could always find FSU in the top five in every national poll. These days they are swimming just to keep their heads above water in the top 25. Regardless, there is a much celebrated history with National Championships in 1993 and 1999 including a dominating decade of owning the ACC. In a lot of ways, Florida State football as a whole is in the same boat as the Kentucky Basketball program. Just over a decade ago the Cats played in three consecutive national championships games and were ranked in the top ten every season. Now second round exits and unranked in the polls is not hard to find when you look at the UK. Sort of a interesting match up, as Tubby has left the building, and now we find out that Bowden is not far behind. Look for extensive coverage of the Music City Bowl as the game approaches.
