Report: NCAA about to notify Kansas of 'multiple major violations'

Ready for a Friday afternoon news dump? According to the Kansas City Star, the NCAA is about to issue a notice of allegations to the Kansas men’s basketball program that will detail “multiple major violations.”

The NCAA has been investigating Kansas for the past several months after the Jayhawks were named in the FBI’s probe into the pay-for-play recruiting scheme. Former Adidas employee T.J. Gassnola testified in federal court last October that he made payments on behalf of the shoe company to the mother of Kansas basketball player Billy Preston and the guardian of fellow Jayhawk Silvio De Sousa. Gassnola was sentenced to probation, while De Sousa was given a two-year suspension by the NCAA, which was later reduced to one year following Kansas’ appeal.

Kansas assistant Kurtis Townsend was also heard on an FBI wiretap discussing what the Jayhawks needed to do to land Zion Williamson. As for Bill Self’s involvement, Gassnola testified that Kansas’ head coach was not aware of the payments; however, text messages between Self, Gassnola, and Townsend suggest otherwise.
