While the Kroger KSR Game of the Week may have been the best of the bunch, week two of the KHSAA football season did not disappoint.

Featuring three top-25 matchups and a couple of near record-breaking performances, the lights were on Kentucky high school football this weekend. Here are some of the notable stories and scores coming out of week two:

No. 11 LCA (2-0) def. No. 4 Boyle Co. (1-1) 35-28:

LCA upset the Rebels on their home turf, snapping their 12-game winning streak that was the longest active KHSAA steak prior to Saturday night. This was Boyle County’s first regular-season loss dating back to Aug. 31, 2017.

The Eagles were down a quarterback in Drew Nieves to an undisclosed setback. Nieves was suited up and in good spirits on the sideline but saw no action. Miami (OH) commit Mason Moore filled in at quarterback for LCA.

Each squad scored one touchdown apiece in each of the first three quarters. The trend was set to continue until Virginia commit Xavier Brown broke one free for 69 yards for the eventual game-winning score giving LCA a two-score final quarter.

“Just getting off of tackles,” Brown said post-game about what was going through his head. “We were talking all game how I was just going to break one once the time came.”

Brown finished with 221 rushing yards on 25 carries (8.8 yards per rush) in the Eagle victory. LCA will travel to Belfry (0-2) for week three.

No. 9 Saint Xavier (2-0) def. No. 15 Central (0-2) 30-6:

An impressive start to 2021 for the Saint Xavier Tigers is mirrored by an equally abysmal beginning for Louisville Central. The Yellowjackets have dropped their first two games of the season, amassing 398 total yards in 2021 — compare that to Saint Xavier’s 729 through two games.

Tiger quarterback Jack Sivori’s four touchdowns and 122 all-purpose yards proved why he’s one of the Commonwealth’s top dual-threat options in KHSAA. On 13 rushing attempts, he ran for 88 yards and two scores. Sivori only threw the ball 11 times Friday night, but two of those were caught for touchdowns to Mekhi Smith and Bennett Boehnlein.

While the final score is lopsided, Central played the Tigers close in the first half. Heading into the locker room down 14-6 (7-6 after one), the Yellowjackets had their shot at taking down the No. 9 team in the KSR rankings but stalled in the second half.

Saint Xavier pulled away in the second half, scoring 16-straight points. They will head into week three against No. 1 Male undefeated.

No. 1 Male (2-0) def. Ballard (1-1) 51-14

It took Male’s junior running back Daniel Swinney 24 rushes to accumulate 262 yards and three touchdowns in less than three quarters of play to help improve the Bulldogs to 2-0. Swinney came up limping with cramps and was given limited field access after the fact, mostly because Male was ahead by several scores.

“It was the help of my teammates,” Swinney said on how he was able to find lanes. “My linemen opened up the holes for me, and we were on the same page. But we still have work to do.”

KSR’s No. 1 KHSAA team scored on eight of their first nine drives against the Bruins. Senior quarterback Nic Schutte completed 10 of 19 passes for 227 yards for four scores. Schutte hit sophomore Max Gainey and junior Dominic Vrbancic for a combined 108 yards and three touchdowns.

The two lone Bruin scores came in the second quarter, both via the arm of quarterback Ethan Barnett to Chaunte Marrero and Kameron Horton.

Other Notable KHSAA Scores:

  • Daviess County (2-0) def. Owensboro Catholic (0-2) 56-19: Panthers quarterback Joe Humphrey had 567 passing yards and six touchdowns — good for seventh all-time in KHSAA history.
  • Eastern (1-1) def. Bethlehem (1-1) 52-42: Eagles running back Pierce Humpich recorded 32 carries for 416 yards — 20th all-time in KHSAA history.
  • Bell County (1-1) def. Knox Central (1-1) 22-14: Bell County head coach Dudley Hilton captured his 400th career victory after defeating the Panthers Friday night — second all-time in KHSAA history.
  • No. 22 Highlands (2-0) def. Simon Kenton (0-2) 53-38
  • Madison Central (1-1) def. Dunbar (1-1) 34-24
