Today, the Lexington Center Board voted unanimously to award the contract to renovate Rupp Arena and the surrounding convention center to Messer Construction Company. The project, which will be completed in November 2021 and cost an estimated $241 million, includes a new exterior for Rupp Arena, chair back seating in the upper level, four new club areas, and the demolition of the Jefferson Street Bridge, details of which you can find here.

The design by NBBJ Architects and EOP Architects, which was approved back in December 2016, will remain intact. We’ve seen these before, but here are the renderings of Rupp’s new entrances:

According to the Herald-Leader, construction will begin next month and done in phases as to not affect UK Basketball games, concerts, or events. As Drew told you earlier this month, Town Branch Park, a ten-acre green space, is also part of the plan:

Lexington is getting its own Central Park

Between UK’s extreme campus makeover and this, pretty soon I won’t even recognize Lexington when I drive in.
